Has anyone heard from Maryland? Daughter has been working on her scholarship project and essays for over a month…would be awful if she didn’t get in at all… ugh she’s not the type to procrastinate on things but perhaps she should have this time.

Tulane does not admit by major. Everyone is accepted to Newcomb-Tulane College, which contains the 5 schools that have all the majors. Architecture, Business, Liberal Arts, Public Health/Tropical Medicine, and Science/Engineering. Anyone is free to choose to major within any of these schools, and double major even if the majors are in two different schools. The only exception might be Architecture, Tulane seems to be trying to decide whether to require a portfolio or not for this. This year they are. Anyway, major has little to do with it, especially since more than half of students nationwide change majors at least once.

@OHMomof2 is correct, any notification about the Honors Program would have been in your initial letter. However, you can definitely earn your way in.

Thanks for replying. I guess I will just have to remain nervous for 2 more weeks then. :(

Here from soflo with 3.38 unweighted gpa + 2200 sat - just received in the mail the letter saying I got the “academic achievement award” for 20 grand a year. Nothing about honors program, though :/.

@gettingaclue I know of 3 people that have heard back in Baltimore, MD…but I am not one of them

@fallenchemist could you possibly elaborate on how one can earn his or her way into the Honors Program? Does this mean demonstrating a strong academic record during one’s freshman year at Tulane and then applying for the Honors Program? Can one even apply for the program? Thanks!

Has anyone heard yet that has submitted an art portfolio?

@Ravenclawrose55

With the caveat that I have not gone back and read if there any changes lately, if a student achieves at least a 3.60 after freshman year they can apply to be part of the Honors Program. This is also true after sophomore year. I know they still extend invitations after freshman and sophomore year, I am less sure if that GPA is still the benchmark or if it has gone up.

It is also possible that if you have a great first semester your senior year of high school (all A’s would be the best of course) and if you were close to making the cut before, as, for example, a $27K scholarship would indicate, you can write to the Honors Program and ask them to review your latest stats and see if they might extend an invitation now. That has happened in the past as well. But it is only worth doing that if your new stats represent a real change in your overall record and you were borderline before. Otherwise better to earn your way in after Freshman year.

@dns031 - I think only the students being offered the $30K and $32K scholarships are getting invited to the Honors Program as entering freshmen. That would represent approximately the top 15% of the incoming class, statistically.

Last year my son was not initially invited to the Honors program but he had an outstanding senior year and got 4.0’s on both college classes he was taking and sometime in June or July I think, (It was after his school sent in his final transcript) he got a letter welcoming him to the Honors program.

Also applying to Case Western, U Rochester, UC Santa Barbara, and a few others

Congrats to your daughter! Chemical Engineering major wanting to major in Dance? That’s an uncommon combination. I imagine she’s going to get some great merit. Good luck with the rest of your apps.

Yes, @Ctesiphon, it’s been a challenge to find mid-sized schools with the ChemE major/Dance minor combination!!T Plus she wants to be someplace warm.

@jmek15

Sounds like Tulane is a good fit if the money works out. Tulane makes it so easy to major in something like ChemE and either have a second major or minor in something else as different as dance. I had to chuckle that you say she wants to be someplace warm yet she is applying to both Case and U Rochester. Good schools for ChemE though, no doubt about that.

I applied EA on Nov 12th or 13th and I still have not heard anything. I would be very grateful if anyone would be willing to chance me.
@Tulanestudent11:

Could u please give stats. My d applied in the first week of September.
Her gpa is 4.0
Stellar extracurriculars
Sports
Service
Letters of rec
Etc…but she only has a 28 on the act which I’m pretty sure is the reason why her Gibson acct still reads “pending”

Could u share ur stats and give us some hope. Please
Thanks and congrats!

@emorytulanereach No one can chance you accurately. They really can’t. At this point just hope for the best and trust it will all work out in the end :)
