2019 Tulane EA/SCEA Decision Thread

@fallenchemist‌ @engineering2015‌ I sent my counselor an email. I’m trying not to worry about it, more likely than nto it’s something I can fix.

Hello, @Hi1997‌. Before a couple of years ago I could have answered your question with a high degree of confidence. Then it seemed the awards were purely stat based. Let’s put it this way, back then I actually created a spreadsheet that had the UW GPA and test scores of the people that had already won, and was able to predict 100% what people with similar stats would get awarded. But now it seems that, while stats still are the main factor, they are also looking at qualitative factors. I could be wrong, but that is how it seems. So I really cannot say and would be reluctant to guess what the minimum stats are for getting at least something. Besides, it is balancing test scores, GPA and strength of schedule so there wouldn’t be one “magic” minimum anyway. A very high test score will offset a somewhat lower GPA to some degree, and vice versa.

My guess for your case, since you asked? I think you are right that you are on the border of getting something and not, but probably not. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Good luck!!

@StagNation‌

Another piece of advice I can give you, since I assume there is no rush on this (by which I mean it doesn’t really matter if you find out now or a month or two from now, as long as you know before you have to make a final college decision), is to wait until you have your final first semester grades. Assuming they are at least equally strong as your previous grades, then you can use those as the reason you are asking Tulane to review your record and reconsider a merit scholarship. That is not an unusual request.

I just got my acceptance letter yesterday and I hope this gives hope to a few people. I had a 3.57/5.0 GPA (B+), only a 2050 SAT, had a mistake on my application, and never visited the campus! 4 AP classes and applying for Poli Sci. Also a white girl from Westchester, NY so nothing special there! But, my essays were killer (why tulane was long and detailed), I had fantastic extracurriculars, had a hook, and really reached out to my rep (sent her a handwritten note). Really did not expect to get in because Tulane was my reach school. It is my number one and I will probably be attending in the fall!

Showing interest and making sure they know you want to go there can make up for your weaknesses at Tulane.

Accepted!!

Weaknesses: GPA and test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed a lot of interest. I visited the school, emailed my counselor a couple of times, and went to the in school visit.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Show a lot of interest, it definitely helps if it is a reach.

Good luck to everyone else!!

@s3ni0r when did you apply?

From what I can tell, when you applied doesn’t have much to do with when you’ll hear back. It seems like it depends on where you live.

@emorytulanereach‌ I applied at the end of September. And my GPA was actually a 3.32 apparently!

@classof2015WHS yes, I know, but I am from MD as well

Wow!!! Accepted today!! Sooo happy!

has anyone from NJ heard back? I’m still waiting and it’s KILLING me!!

@krepdp97‌ any merit $?

Accepted EA on Sunday afternoon (Just found out online … no letter yet)

Minnesota

3.5 UW; 3.8 weighted; but 3.8 UW (4.7 W) junior year and first quarter senior; very competitive small private school.

Lots of ECs
Lots of Honors and AP
Varsity Team captain (baseball, but not a scholarship-level player)

Legacy (two Grandparents).

Ton of family connections to New Orleans and a really good “Why Tulane” essay. Tulane is very much on his shortlist!

Everyone waiting to hear back anxiously, don’t be afraid to call them! However, instead of speaking with the interns ask to speak with an admissions counselor. They are all so friendly and when it seemed like everyone from my area except me heard back I called and spoke with them about my status. Next day, accepted! Coincidence, maybe…but I think it was that phone call.

I posted this in the wrong thread - so am trying again.

Hi everyone, for those getting nervous (as we were) I wanted to give a little hope. My son applied in early October, and his application was compete in early October. He logged on earlier today and was thrilled to see the status change to “congratulations!” His stats are lower (3.3, 1990 SATs, 1 AP) than those I have been reading about on CC. However, typically Tulane accepts a lot of kids from my son’s high school - it is a very competitive school, which probably makes a big difference. My son did visit, completed the Why Tulane essay, and he did make it clear that it is his top choice. Some others at his HS heard before him, and some, who probably have higher stats than he does, have yet to hear. I do not know when any of them applied or when their applications were complete. I hope this helps some of you worry a bit less.

what exactly did you say to the admission officer?

@college1997q sorry forgot to tag you. what did you say to admission officer?

@college1997q‌ I’d like to know as well! I don’t want to catch them at the wrong time in a bad mood and have it affect my chances and I also don’t want to annoy them in this hectic time as they’re trying to get decisions out. A lot of my friends have heard back and have been accepted. Two were even accepted before the early deadline with scholarship offers. I am on the lower end of the GPA scale and am anxiously awaiting a response but as of right now, my Gibson portal says my “application is complete and is awaiting review.” I’m from GA btw.

Not sure if this was related at all, but I called last Thursday just to ensure they had received my November SAT scores to show I cared and was on top of things and was accepted Saturday morning. I applied in September and many students from my school had gotten their acceptances weeks ago so I was worried.
