2019 Tulane EA/SCEA Decision Thread

Thanks @gminor @zebrarunner @fallenchemist. I’m hoping for the best but bracing for the worst. Tulane is my first choice, I put my heart into the Why Tulane essay and have middle of the road stats relative to this board. Tons of extracurriculars, leadership, internships, excellent recommendations. Nervous :-S

Hey everybody! I have been anxiously waiting for months to hear back from Tulane since early october and with my grades/stats it was a reach for me. My school does not do gpas but if it were calculated it would be around a 3.1. Also my SAT scores were pretty average 660 Reading 640 Writing 550 Math. I am a black female from Northern NJ, I go to an extremely competitive independent private day school (ranked #3 in NJ) so maybe thats why my grades weren’t taken too seriously since the classes are really challenging (this year I am in 4 IB’s). I have tons of xc’s (basketball, volleyball, track&field captains for all 3, some clubs, and two immersion trips (one to guatemala and one to NOLA). Tulane was my absolute number 1 and i’m so excited I got in hopefully I can afford it (income 70,000 with a single mom).So all those out there with not so stellar grades/sat’s dont worry by showing tons of interest and just being you everything will work out :slight_smile:

@nellie97‌

You may already know about this, but Tulane has a no loan guarantee program for families with incomes under $75,000 per year. <a href=“Need-Based Financial Aid | Undergraduate Admission”>Need-Based Financial Aid | Undergraduate Admission; (Bottom of page). Now of course there are other factors such as assets on hand, but certainly something you should be aware of.

Congrats @nellie97!!! From your post, I can tell you’ll add so much to Tulane. I really hope you get the financial aid you need. You deserve it. Way to go!

Okay, honestly, I am really irritated/annoyed/confused/worried. I still haven’t heard bac. My stats are 3.82 gpa, 32 act, several leadership, volunteer, etc., and I am from tennessee. I did the why tulane essay and thought it was okay, but my other essay was brilliant. I know I asked this several times before, but I am seriously concerned because I am applying ed to vandy too and thinking I won’t get that because I didn’t get into tulane yet. Will I be defered?

Accepted!

Applied during the extended EA period and submitted on 12/3
Objective: ACT 34, 3.97 GPA. AP US History (5), AP Physics B (5) 3 Senior year APs
Subjective: 4 Year Varsity Football, 3 Yr Track, most significant ECs have been music related, District / State level
State: Michigan
School: Private / Parochial
Completed Optional “Why Tulane” with an essay about Music Rising and my desire to continue to pursue music and Physics

Hoping for merit to make it a reality!

@fallenchemist‌ Hey, am I categorized under those who might get deferred because I haven’t received anything back yet? Although I applied on November 15th, Tulane didn’t receive my transcript until December 2nd (you just gotta love those guidance counselors who tell you they will send it, but don’t do anything unless you be tenacious <3)

I have a 31 ACT (31 E, 34 M, 30 R 28 S 10 Essay), 92.02 UW GPA, 95 W GPA, IB Math SL (7), IB World Religions SL (6), 4 IBs and 1 AP senior year, 4 IBs last year
Alot of leadership and activities in the arts, whether it be drama, gala dance, talent show. I Tutor ACT and SAT Math, also I’m a general tutor in school, as well as tutor the bilingual students. NHS, NMathHS, NScienceHS, alot of other cool things
State: NY
School: Public
Completed “Why Tulane” talked about one of my idols in science, Rudolph Matas, who graduated Tulane and how the education there would help me strive to make an impact like he did.

@Castigations‌

Hmmm, with that late transcript it is hard to say. But your resume sure looks good for Tulane. I think even if you don’t hear by the 15th you will hear by the end of the year because they extended the EA deadline to Dec 3 (with the caveat that people applying between Nov. 15-Dec 3 might not hear back until the end of the year), and your transcripts beat that deadline anyway. So personally I wouldn’t think you would get deferred, but of course it is hard to predict. You just might have to wait a couple more weeks to find out.

@fallenchemist‌ That’s reassuring :slight_smile: hopefully I hear back sometime soon! I keep on checking the Gibson Portal haha.

Question - For those who have heard or know of someone who has heard, has anyone been deferred or denied? If not, for those who didn’t hear, do we all find out at once that we have been deferred or denied? Maybe @fallenchemist can answer that question unless others know. As expected, I am in a panic.

@easygoer1‌ if you look in earlier pages of this discussion, there was someone who was deferred.

I saw an early post that someone said their status changed to “your decision is pending review” as opposed to your application is complete and awaiting review. That person indicated that they thought that meant they were deferred. Was that confirmed? On an optimistic side, did that person get in? As indicated earlier, in a panic and trying to find some clue on the decision process. Any help would be appreciated.

@easygoer1 I am re-posting Kaileemet’s post which was either on page 35 or page 36 of this thread.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Rice University (feeling kind of down about my prospects now), Wash U, Vanderbilt, Case Western, ASU, UConn, and a few others.
[*]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I’m pretty surprised that I got deferred, and kind of disappointed. I love Tulane, and it is my number one target school, with only a few reach schools placing ahead of it. I did submit ON the 15th which was probably bad, but family emergencies made it impossible to submit beforehand. I hope I get in later in the year!

@Epicorangeninja I do not think colleges can see that you applied elsewhere… I applied REA to one college and still got in to Tulane.

JUST GOT MY ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION!!! wasn’t expecting it at all!!! going to post some basic stats on here because i think they’ll give you who are still waiting some hope :)

For those of you who have been deferred read the Tulane Admission blog from Jeff Schiffman. There is still hope!

<a href=“Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: I've Been Deferred. Now What?”>http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html</a></p>

What if it still says complete and awaiting review?

I have also been checking Gibson too many times each day and mine has been “pending review” since Friday. I’m getting so worried!!

Wow. That blog post says so far less than 25% of applicants were accepted. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted thus far.

@alkat3 if you dont mind me asking, what ethnicity are you? bc my gpa and scores aren’t that high and im really banking on the fact of me being a minority as having a better chance of getting in
