Friend’s daughter got deferred from Tulane but got into U Penn yesterday.

Update to post #875 and #877: just got the official letter in the mail. Presidential Scholar Award of $32,000 annually and invitation into the Honors Program. It’s better than nothing, but Tulane is pretty pricey. I would still need to wait and see what happens with other scholarship apps in order for my family to be able to seriously consider Tulane (thus why we’re hopping for admissions into other colleges with better aid programs).
Does anyone know when the Paul Tulane Award decisions are sent out?

$32K is better than nothing? I would say so!

When I got my acceptance letter to Tulane, it didn’t say anything about whether or not I would be offered a partial scholarship. Does this mean that I am not going to be offered one?

@dreamer21 Better than nothing? The Presidential is the highest level of merit scholarship awarded! (aside from the separate application scholarships)

I am sure @Dreamer21 didn’t mean it quite the way it sounded. I understand that even with $32K scholarship the remaining $33K or so can be unaffordable for many families. To answer your question, Dreamer21, the DHS and PTA are both announced around the end of February, maybe bleeding into the first few days of March. Also I would mention not to forget about need based FA, which can sometimes include grants as well as loans.

@BaYlEe

Yes, if there was nothing in the letter then Tulane did not offer you a merit scholarship. I am assuming you did not improve your ACT score? If not, merit money is unlikely I think. Did you ever look into the legislative scholarship?

Wow! I got accepted on the 4th and I was on vacation this past week and came home to a 30k/year premiere scholarship & admission to the honors program! Considering I wasn’t even sure about being admitted at all this is a really pleasant surprise and even more so solidifies Tulane as my first choice.

Hey guys,
So, I got deferred. Tulane was supposed to be a safety school. Anyways, I think the reason I got deferred was that my SSR had not reached the school by the deadline. In fact, I think I checked online and saw I was deferred before my SSR was received by them. Is this the most possible reason for deferral? I have a 3.7 unweighted, and a 2330 SAT for reference.

@sgtweed I’m not so sure. My guidance counsellor really messed up my EA application - didn’t even submit my transcript, just the school report. But, my gibson status site still said my application was complete. Called admissions the other day to see why my EA decision hadn’t been released and they just said it was because stuff wasn’t in my file and once they got it the switched it over to RD. No deferral message ever came up for me. Maybe call admissions to confirm what your situation is.

@mimime9 Hmm, well I remember checking the status of my application right after the deadline, and they did not have any of my stuff. They said I was deferred before my SSR reached them. Is it possible for they to have come up with the decision of deferral just days after I applied? I was just surprised because my numbers say Tulane should be a safety school for me.

@sgtweed

It is impossible to say why you were deferred. But if reading through this thread makes nothing else clear, it is that high numbers mean nothing in predicting whether or not you will be accepted or deferred at Tulane. They are clearly looking at more than your GPA and SAT/ACT.

@fallenchemist I was deferred, do I have to reapply or will I automatically be reconsidered?

Deferred applicants are deferred to the regular applicant pool. Do look at Tulane Jeff’s admissions blog for suggestions on how to bolster your application after being deferred.
I’d link it but I am on my phone at the moment. I am sure fallenchemist can link it.

Yes, it has been linked to at least 4 times in this thread, but what the heck. <a href=“Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: I've Been Deferred. Now What?”>http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html

Just to be clear, @cmartin12, you do not reapply. It is automatic for reconsideration.

Are the applicants who applied using the later ea deadline starting to hear?
