Not dismissive, if the higher stats kids are often putting this school down as an afterthought, the expectation of a personal application experience is a bit much. It is a game of numbers at either end.
@Alfonsia
OK, I think I misinterpreted your post. Certainly I agree that anyone that only spent 15 minutes on the application, or anything similar to that in spirit, should not expect a great result.
I think a lot of people don’t understand the whole marketing angle. I don’t have any inside information but I remember reading an article from a few years ago that Tulane (among many other reputable institutions) outsource parts of their marketing/recruitment to companies that specialize in this. Those companies will then send out those “free” ( I always chuckle when someone says Tulane sent them a free app, it’s always free) and start the wooing. A particular SAT score will trigger the start of this process. So it;s not so much the person but the numbers they are recruiting. And, it’s NOT just Tulane, this is college marketing. I wish I could find the article. It was pretty interesting.
Found out I was rejected today, and I’m kind of surprised to be honest. I got into two of my reaches and was rejected from a match. Honestly, Tulane was making me insanely angry anyhow because I applied EA, they lost my secondary school report (which my GC reported 2 months ago), and I just now found out, so I’m pretty apathetic about my decision. And yes, I was sent a free app. I don’t think I showed enough interest.
@bookaddiiict
But let’s face it, the lead story here is that you got into two of your reaches!! That is great, congratulations. Have you made a choice yet?
@fallenchemist I’m still waiting on a couple more! But I can’t be bitter about Tulane. I wouldn’t have gone there, so that spot definitely should have gone to someone else. Right now, I’m heavily leaning towards Pomona College because it’s perfect in just about every way I can imagine.
@bookaddiiict
Perfect. That’s just how you should feel about where you attend college. Best of luck.
As much as I didn’t want to face this situation, I took myself off Tulane’s waitlist. I don’t want to have to regret enrolling somewhere else before I heard back from Tulane if I got accepted and I don’t want to be apart of a percentage of applicants who were rejected.
Best of luck!
Now that the dust has settled and my D’s results are all in, I thought I’d chime in. @fallenchemist has been dead on with advice and insight into the Tulane selection process. I wish all schools on CC had someone as helpful. My D was enticed by Tulane’s emails to apply EA, and it was admittedly as a safety. If not for the emails and 0 application fee, she would not have applied. She has stellar stats, but you never know going into this process where you will end up, and together with Tulane’s reputation and the appeal of generous merit aid, it was enticing and she bit. She showed interest, but she was deferred. On RD, she was waitlisted. Realistically, Tulane calculated that this was a safety for her, and it turned out to be the only school that waitlisted her. She was admitted to all her top choices.
The only bit of advice I offer to those with high stats and aren’t fully vested in attending Tulane if accepted: don’t bother applying unless it is a top choice for you.
D will remove herself from the waitlist. Best of luck to all who were admitted, and for those on the waitlist. It is a terrific school, and you have boundless futures ahead of you.
D was deferred and we are awaiting a decision. Is it strange that we still don’t have a decision or is that par for the course. We would love a yes with merit aid. Can we still even get merit aid at this point? That’s the only way my d could attend.
@NJProParent
Thanks for the kind reference. I am so glad your daughter got such outstanding results. Does she have a first choice yet?
@NJProParent and @fallenchemist
That is exactly why we decided not to apply to Tulane. My son was not really that crazy about the school and we were viewing it more as a good opportunity to try for merit aid. Realizing that they really want to see a lot of sincere interest, we decided not to apply there and put our efforts instead into the University of Miami, which also has merit aid, but is a much better match for him overall. Still waiting to hear the final word back from them, but he’s got a few other affordable offers from great schools, so he is in good shape in any case.
Congratulations on your daughter’s offers! Sounds like she will end up at a great school!
