2020 Caltech Discussion Thread

Posting my stats; I was accepted.

35 on ACT (didn’t take SAT)
4.88 GPA, 3.96 UW, class ranking: 4/330 and 17/330
800 on SAT Math and Bio
Taken APs: AP calc (4), AP Biology (4), AP gov(5), AP Stats(5).
Current classes: IB french HL, IB English HL, AP psychology, AP Environmental, AP Comp Sci.
Extracurricular (NO leadership what so ever): Science Olympiad, forensics(really poorly for a year), piano, art, research(Two years, separate projects), Business professionals(2 year).
Quite a bit of community service, especially involving children and learning.

Now, it all seems pretty average huh,
BUT, my friend and I partnered up for a research project last year, and we went to Intel ISEF where we won two special prizes (lol it just had to related to what the sponsors’ areas are, nothing on how goo the research actually is).

Both of us got in. She got in early action, I was deferred then accepted.
So go win something international.

I will be posting my stats later, but for reference I was admitted and got the financial aid email beforehand.

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4 (all As in everything from 9th grade)
Weighted GPA: - (different kind of grading here)

AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Physics C: E&M, 5 Calc BC, 5 Chem
IB (place score in parenthesis): -
Senior Year Course Load: Math, Physics, Chem, Computer Science, English, Sanskrit
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Ranked 1 all-India in a science test, Regional Mathematical Olympiad highest scorer in country, Junior Science Olympiad highest scorer in state, KVPY, NTSE (all national science scholarships, BTW), lots of local math competitions and quizzes.

Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: None (shocking, right?)
Summer Activities: Programming competitions, and preparing for a science competition.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Ratings are very ambiguous, but here goes:
Very happy with them. Really loved the prompts.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Should have been good, my science teachers liked me.
Teacher Rec #1: Physics Teacher (8/10)
Teacher Rec #2: Computer Science Teacher (8/10)
Teacher Rec #3: Geography Teacher (9/10)
Counselor Rec: 8/10
Additional Rec: None

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Computer Science, or, Mathematics and Computing
State (if domestic applicant): California (US citizen living in India)
Country (if international applicant): (US citizen from India)
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian Indian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 40,000-50,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection:

Strengths: Academics for sure. Even though my SAT is low, I think the Olympiad experience makes up for it. Participated and won in lots of other science competitions as well.
Weaknesses: Look at ECs. This definitely hurt me. It wasn’t that I wasn’t interested or was lazy, just that the rigor and timings of my school really killed alot of opportunities that way. Don’t regret it though, have learnt a lot along the way.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ECs and other outside school stuff. Not a very balanced app.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UIUC, CWRU, UC San Diego
Waitlisted: Georgia Tech, UC Davis, Rose Hulman
Rejected: Stanford

General Comments:

Surprised really.

Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2340 superscored (770 CR, 780 M, 790 W)
ACT (breakdown): didn’t take
SAT II: 800 Math 2, 780 Chem
Unweighted GPA: Don’t know. Not a Canadian HS thing
Weighted GPA:
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): Didn’t take
IB (place score in parenthesis): (not 100% sure about the predictions my teachers gave me) HL Math (6), SL Physics (7), SL Chem (7), HL CS (6), HL English (6), SL French (7), HL Economics (6)
Senior Year Course Load: All of the above minus French
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None of significance

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Chess (international level, senior school team captain and club leader), Astronomy club (founder and leader), variable star observation, 4 online edx astrophysics courses, research at a synchrotron, school music council (vice-president), intern at financial services company, symphonic band (section leader)
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Non-profit chess-teaching program (treasurer)
Summer Activities: Some Canadian STEM and entrepreneurship camp (SHAD) and more chess
Essays (rating 1-10, details): To be honest, I thought they SUCKED (and some people that edited them told me they sucked too!). Technically started them in May 2015, and wanted to cry every time I was editing them. College apps were so stressful for me, to the point where I started to question my self-worth (yeah, my self-esteem issue is embarrassing)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Honestly have no idea. Probably were stellar given the result!
Additional Rec: None

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Astrophysics
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Canada
School Type: Public magnet
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)

Income Bracket: 50,000 - 60,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Two X chromosomes? Sort of first-gen?

Reflection:

Strengths: I…honestly don’t know? Sorry but…I really just can’t say
Weaknesses: No major awards, personally thought my IB scores were terrible (though when they get converted to percentages, they’re all 90s), Chem II could have been better (people at my school absolutely killed it -.-), didn’t take SAT II for physics even though I wanted to major in it?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I hate to repeat but…I don’t know? I hope just my objective stats will be of use to future applicants
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted:
Waitlisted:
Rejected:
(no results from anything yet)

General Comments:

I have trouble comprehending that I am really replying to a CC thread talking about my CALTECH ACCEPTANCE. This was by far my first choice, out of all the American, Canadian, and British schools I applied to.

To any future applicants reading this, please don’t let my negativity get to you. Though apps were stressful, they really made me think about what I learned from my activities and appreciate my personal qualities. Though I don’t know exactly why I was accepted, I do know that I don’t regret the time and effort I put in my activities and I loved every second (yes, even the late nights) of my high school life. I do know that I see the best in people, and I thank Caltech for seeing the best in me.

To all those accepted, here’s to many late nights that we will never forget with people that we will also never forget

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The only reason I can think of is the aid requirement and that I’m Asian. I thought my application was fairly strong.

Reflection
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: GPA, lack of significant awards. Tried to do stuff like math and physics olympiads but never got to the point I should’ve for the amount of work I put in. I sacrificed my grades to try to become good at them in the same way an athlete or musician might, but ultimately it didn’t pay off. no regrets though, still learned a lot.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ^
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected WashU

So I got waitlisted at Caltech with some pretty average stats compared to the rest of the waitlisted people I see on here (31 ACT, 4.0UW GPA, 760 Math II SAT, 790 Physics SAT, no major academic awards, no research). Does this mean my chances at schools like UCLA or UC Berkeley are higher than I thought?

Waitlisted…how many people are waitlisted? anyone know the chance of getting in that way?
