2020 PRE-SCREEN THREAD

Hi, I am new to this board. My S plays piano/keyboards (commercial music and jazz). His prescreen results so far:

1/11 - Belmont
1/25 - Berklee
2/2 - Cal Arts
2/14 - Frost
2/29 - New School
3/5 - NYU Steinhardt
3/21 - U Arts (Philadelphia)
(Did not pass USC. Accepted to Elon.)

Can’t private message so I will post these here. Here are my remaining auditions/options. (VP Soprano, dual major in English)

1/20 Denison
1/24 U-M SMTD
1/31 Central Michigan
2/2 CIM
2/12 Olivet
2/17 Peabody
2/29 Oberlin
Case Western (requires a video only)

Already accepted to Capital & WVU. Waitlisted at Baldwin Wallace. Did not pass prescreens at IU, CCM & NEC.

Wow! I hadn’t visited in a couple of weeks. So many new posts about passing prescreens. I already posted about my son’s audition to UMiami Frost for the M.A.D.E program. He also will be auditioning Feb 9th at USC Thornton for Contemporary Vocal Performance. Good luck to all! My BIG question is does anyone know how many applicants get invited to the USC audition?

Did anyone mention rejections? Eastman wrote on 7th of January with an update, my kid did not get a call back for in-person auditions. Would have been interesting to know why… She has a very unique mezzo voice.

MezzoMama - I think it is completely subjective. Some factors could be the number of applicants to that school, the number of mezzos, what the faculty likes to hear in prescreen videos, what voice roles the faculty is looking to fill within their own voice studios. I don’t think that there is one right answer. The good news is your daughter still has some excellent schools that she is applying to so I am sure she will have options!

Sorry TableofSix… the newbie here did not know to include video auditions/accepted,

D Soprano VP and neuroscience:

Syracuse/Setnor-video audition
Case Western-video audition (only option-no in person)
Duquesne accepted (early/direct admit Pre-med, audition invite for VP)

Agree, mom2jw. Great question! Does anyone know how many get invited to audition at any of the schools listed? I saw stats on some schools and on others there is no information at all. And I don’t want to be pushy with that ask to admissions.

@MezzoMama if she has quite a few prescreen passes at other schools (which it appears she does), it doesn’t matter “why” (but still of course it will bug you). Not everyone hits 100% and you can only pick one school…so one that wasn’t a good fit (maybe too many mezzos accepted last year) is gone. Focus on the others. But know that panels DO make errors. I’m quite sure Juilliard made an error when they passed on my D. Silly Juilliard. In the long run, it doesn’t matter…so don’t let it plant any seeds of doubt. Plenty of great kids get passed on. It’s part of the business…particularly as you climb higher.

@bridgenail - HA! Silly Juilliard indeed! That made my day!

@SongStress2024, you’re good! You share what you want. Some of us are only partially sharing depending on comfort level. There is a separate acceptance thread to celebrate wins, however, so be sure to report in over there!

Did not past CCM prescreen (which he was philosophical about; his voice is still changing so he’s a bit behind a lot of guys) nor did he pass Juilliard (this was a surprise and he did cry… okay, he sobbed; he goes to a performing arts school and everyone just expected him to pass, so comments were made)

Aww, @MomOfSingers, we’ve all been there. I hate it so much when they are disappointed after they’ve worked so hard! It makes me angry, even though I know it’s part of life and they have to learn to take it in stride, yada yada.

He sounds immensely talented and he will, of course, end up somewhere amazing But it still sucks, for parents as well as kids.

@MomofSingers - A young male’s voice is so much in development at 18. So tell him to just get in front of a good amt of teachers…and have faith the RIGHT teacher will see him and think…“ah ha I know exactly what to do with that voice!” My D’s teacher picked her because she heard a potential “Mozart” voice. She passes on “Wagner” voices bc she would say…“great voice but I have no idea what to do with that”. So it’s NOT all about talent…it’s about finding the right FIT and right TEACHER for his voice (which is highly in development and some teachers are better at that than others). Maybe Juilliard thought “great voice…but we don’t have the right teacher right now…the guy that does that voice type is full.” You never know…but Juilliard for an UG male vocalist…hmm unless his voice settled in REALLY early…I think a pass is OK. Regardless of opinions at his high school, my opinion would be…you have BETTER schools on your list for a young vocalist developing a voice (for males that would be 99% of them). The soprano voice can settle in early but most mezzos and males are stumbling around some trying to find themselves. There’s NOTHING wrong with that…you can’t rush nature (imo).

And glad to see Lawrence on someone’s list. I have noted its absence this year as it is often popular. I know a VP guy that started at Lawrence, did IU for grad and is singing professionally (note no Juilliard on his resume).

I know, @akapiratequeen! To hear a teen (and a boy, at that) sob, is heartbreaking. As is the spiraling (I am never going to get into a conservatory, my voice sucks, etc.). But yeah… this is one of those character-building events that I should not swoop in and take away from him. I know he needs things like this to grow. But wow… it is very hard! (And yes, I was “mad at” Juilliard for awhile!)

Thanks, @bridgenail . Young mail voices are a challenge–for the owner, and the teacher! Lawrence was added after my son didn’t pass Juilliard’s prescreens. I have friends whose kids are at St. Olaf’s (organ) and Lawrence (voice) and I had been begging him to look at least one of them because my friends’ kids love these schools so much. It wasn’t until the “Juilliard thing,” that he consented to apply to Lawrence. He had a phone interview with a conservatory alum (piano performance) who now works in radio in NYC. The guy really got my son thinking about what being a musician really means. This alone may have been the gift. SO nice to hear about your VP friend. There are so many musical paths one can walk down. I appreciate the reminder and the comforting words!

D now has a total of 15 auditions. Most recent 3 are California State schools (SDSU, CSU Long Beach and CSU Fullerton) as safeties. That makes 5 schools local counting Oberlin and CMU regional in LA, and 10 we need to travel. I will consider video auditions if we can’t make it to the end, but I have 5 trips booked as of now. Trip 1 tomorrow and hope the weather doesn’t delay us too much.
CSU dates TBD- I don’t know when we’ll fit them all in at this point!

Wow!! I am in awe, @coloraturagirl ! You sound wonderfully organized and efficient! Enjoy this time with your daughter!!! And good luck to her! Hope she has fun and has the outcomes that she most desires! When are you at Oberlin? We are there 2/15.

Thank you, @MomofSingers! She did Oberlin on 1/7 regional in LA. I have definitely made LOTS of google docs, travel agendas, and to do lists. We made the decision to apply to many schools because we have a large family with one already in college, and wanted D to have as many options as possible. We are thrilled she has been invited for so many auditions; I hope we both can keep energy up. Glad her test prep is behind us and she has a lighter load next semester. Best of luck on your journey too!

D just passed Juilliard prescreen in composition! Couldn’t be more excited!
