@drummermom2020 Good luck! My S had his audition Dec 8th in Chicago. Not sure it is common, but they were running way behind on the auditions but once he went into the practice room, it was about a 45 minute process.

If I remember correctly, we were told results would come out in March (??) but he received an email about 10 days later, checked the portal and found out he was accepted. It also said due to the competition, he would not be offered a scholarship. They have Water and Coffee on hand and had some snacks.

There is a Starbucks nearby. We went to Nando’s Peri Peri Chicken afterwards and I thought it was great.

Thanks but no thanks from Curtis… This comes on the heels of being accepted as a semifinalist to one of the top local competitions in LA. Life of a singer is bittersweet. No doubt about that.

@mezzomom I feel like there isn’t always a rhyme or reason to rejections. I’ve seen students place #1 in various competitions and then not even make it to final rounds where the winners are others they’ve consistently come ahead of.

I have come to realize you just dont know what people are looking for and as much as rejection hurts ( esp to a tuition free school, ugh) everyone will end up where they belong. It’s def a lesson that can be hard for the kids.

We are facing the road next year and I’ve never been so uncertain of what’s to come. Some recent setbacks and some teacher changes have really brought out my nerves. Now, my usually confident D is starting to doubt herself. Going to be a long road!

I’m sure your D has some great opportunities!

It is all very subjective. My S was stunned about Boston Con last year - they showed all kinds of interest in him at the summer program, he did get an interview, but then he didn’t get accepted. Curtis is definitely tough. We’re waiting to hear too, and know they only have 2 spots for S’s major.

If anything my S has learned - this industry requires tenacity.

I just wanted to correct what I wrote about my S getting an academic scholarship from IU Bloomington/JSOM… I checked the paperwork last night and it was just the financial aid. It looks like music students don’t get awards/scholarships until AFTER they audition.

@BigPapi2 - Yes, this seems correct. When my D entered long, long ago (2011), IU still had auto-academic scholarships for music students (based on ACT or SAT scores)…which my D qualified for…so we had a known at least for one school prior to auditions. A few years later the Jacobs conservatory took over all scholarships ending the auto-academic ones. I do not know the reason…but I have speculated that the music school seemed stingy compared to other music schools (our experience). Jacobs certainly did take into account the auto-academic scholarships when giving music scholarships. So my D’s music scholarship compared to other institution’s music scholarships looked meager. And, emotionally, you get a nice scholarship in the fall for “academics”…and then peanuts in the spring for your “talent”. I think it created too many calls/concerns for the “conservatory”. I know that it was changed when my D was still there (not impacting her of course). We were looking at “bottom-line” so after the initial shock that she wasn’t going to Jacobs for small change, it still came out competitive for an out-of-state school in our opinions…and less than at some schools that gave bigger scholarships but had bigger price tags.

Based on being on this site, I have noticed that Jacobs releases scholarship near the bloody end…but it can be at different times for different depts…so don’t panic if some get info earlier. For grad VP, IU sent my D’s scholarships on the last day at about 8 pm…she thought she got nothing bc of how late it was in the day.

Remember they do “roll” acceptances at IU. In the past, it is typically around 3 or 4 weeks…but those darn scholarships come late…at least in prior years that was the case.

My son is waiting to hear from his auditions at Hartt, Clemson, UNCA and South Carolina. Has anyone heard from these schools or know when they release admission decisions? He has been admitted to U Mass Lowell, MTSU, SUNY Oswego and New Haven. Sound recording/audio technology major.

Ah @roxnyny I see now you are waiting for admission decisions… Since this was under the prescreen/audition thread I misunderstood. Usually, final decisions for most schools are not likely until March 1, unless EA or rolling. So grab a good book and wait with the rest of us. Good luck!
