Hi moms, any one knows if NYU is a prestigious/good school for classical music performance? My D is a piano major.

@2427Mom - I’m not a piano performance parent (instead a VP parent). The music school at NYU is reputable and prestigious. The one issue with NYU is cost. This is opinion based on experience…but for performance degrees, NYU is not known for giving scholarships that have a significant impact on the cost of attendance. Of course there can be a few exceptions. If “cost of college” is not a concern, then it can definitely be on your list. If it is…it can certainly stay on your list (one never knows who the “unicorn” is)…still you would want to be sure to have other reputable, prestigious schools on the list that are known for giving scholarships to many accepted student that really bring down the cost of attendance. Again one person’s opinion.

Thanks. According to newest update of universities.com, NYU is #1 music performance school in NYC. We have always believed Juilliard is best but here Juilliard is #21, I think it’s because Juilliard has a small number of students? Even if this website is incorrect, how would you rank NYU music program (put the extremely-high-cost aside)

I would not put it at the level of Juilliard or Manhattan School of Music. It’s a very good program but not at that level. (It’s also easier to get in to than either of those places.) Just one opinion.

Rankings are so subjective. I wouldn’t put much weight in them. I would have thought julliard, MSM, Mannes, then NYU in terms of how competitive admissions are for classical music. But you really have to look at individual faculty members for each instrument to be fair. Also most schools will list successful alumni accomplishments such as festival appearances or competition wins. That might be helpful in judging how they compare.

Ahhh…the old best music school list trap. Every list will have a different answer based on different criteria which will make you go in circles. Important note: they want you to read their list even while knowing there is no answer.

This is a prescreening thread so we shouldn’t “highjack it” with this discussion. I would suggest you start your own thread with a title like…how to find the best music school for piano performance. Many people will share experience how they determined BEST.

It is not uncommon to begin the process looking for the best on some list and end the process with a much deeper understanding of best for your kid. Many of the schools listed repeatedly in this pre screen thread are serious and selective music schools. NYU could be the best for your kid but Juilliard or MSM or many others could be best fits as well.

All auditions/interviews DONE! S is so glad. The SFCM Regional interview was disappointing. It was a recorded session with the super nice Admissions guy, S wasn’t asked anything about his prescreen pieces - just canned questions. He’s going to reach out to professors for consults as SFCM recommends. If we had know what it really would have been like we would have traveled to SF so he could interact with the Comp Dept. like the other interviews - which were all awesome.

But here’s the best news - S was accepted to NEC Comp for Undergrad!!!
