Yes true…
But caltech already takes some more students to offset this type of backing out
Caltech’s yield is around 42% historically. They take that into account when deciding how many to admit. But, yes if the yield is less than expected, they may pull some people from the waitlist.
@CuriousBobby I got a travel grant too. You’re probably either low-income or a URM, that’s why.
@dsi411 Apparently, the travel grant also means that they want us to go a day early and have dinner with the faculty?
@CuriousBobby Yep! The PFW organizers said they’re gonna send us more information soon about what exactly we’re gonna do on that day (other than the faculty dinner).
Does Caltech send an acceptance packet by snail mail, or is that stuff only at Prefrosh Weekend?
No acceptance package (I got in EA)
Does any one know accepted students statistics this year. Pl let know how many r waitlisted
Any one here declining the offer
How many of u ppl are accepting the offer ?
@USUG21 I just wanted to make sure you understand how waitlists work for undergrad in the US. It isn’t the same as with some summer programs where they need exactly, say, 36 students, so they admit 36 then pull from the waitlist if some people can’t attend.
Caltech said at Prefrosh Weekend that they admitted 525 students this year. Their normal yield is about 42%. (Give or take, but 42 is close.) That would give them about 220 students. Last year they had 235 freshmen enter, so they are probably aiming for about that number.
So, one person turning Caltech down does not open up a spot for someone else. The same goes for other universities.
@Ynotgo so by ur calculations if yield remains same they will still require 15 ppl rt…
Perhaps. But when you are dealing with small numbers of people as Caltech is, the yield can vary a lot.
Caltech has not yet published its 2015-16 Common Data Set. (I don’t know why.) Their yield could have been higher than 42% that year, so they may be expecting higher this year.
Their 2014-15 Common Data Set says they admitted 576 students (226 enrolled) and offered the waitlist to 615 students. They admitted 47 from the waitlist that year. But, in 2013-14, they admitted 0 from the waitlist. So, it varies a lot.
From your posting history, it looks like you are going to UMich? That’s a great university! Congrats!
I think it is best to focus on the school where you will most likely be attending rather than pining over a bunch of waitlists. My son was waitlisted at 5 places, a couple of which he might have considered over Caltech or made his decision harder. But, after you accept the waitlist and send a letter of continued interest, there’s really not all that much you can do, and it’s time to think about where you actually will be going.
@Ynotgo yes i am comitted to umich rt now… but has my heart on caltech… i am a tough person… no hard feeling if i ll not get off… only positive thinking … umich is grt… i am a grt fit for it as i am in leadership position in school… loves football hella and thrive with frnds… at the same time i love STEM studies the most… maths calculus physics are all my favorite… CS is my forte… so hoping for the best…thnx a lot for ur kind words… u r very kind…
@Ynotgo got this info from last yrs CC thread. Looking at this it is hard to believe CALTECH took such less numberz this year . They must be expecting mucj more yielf…here is the data copy paste…
^^but here is more historical data for everyone’s amusement (taken from Common Data + Caltech website):
Year - Apply - Acp - %Acp - WLT - WLYes - WLAcpt - Enrl - %Yield
2015 - 6530*- 588 - 09% - - ??? - - ??? - - - 0 - - - - - -241 - ??%
2014 - 6525 - 576 - 09% - - 615 - - 482 - - - 47- - - - - 226 - 39%
2013 - 5535 - 584 - 11% - - 550 - - 432 - - - 0 - - - - - -248 - 42%
2012 - 5537 - 651 - 12% - - 651 - - 457 - - - 0- - - - - - 264 - 41%
2011 - 5225 - 667 - 13% - - 556 - - 336 - - - 40 - - - - -244 - 37%
2010 - 4859 - 610 - 13% - - 529 - - 337 - - - 7- - - - - - 222 - 36%
*estimate. Caltech profile indicates > 6500 for 2015, so let’s assume its a little greater than 2014. When the common data for 2015 is published, the real numbers will come out.^^^^^^^^^
So seems this yr no WL admittance…
@USUG21 - I agree with Ynotgo and recommend not stressing over the waitlists/numbers - bright people can do great things wherever they go.
Also, Caltech doesn’t have a football team (if you’re talking about American football), if that makes you feel any better.
