Today’s the day - the FAFSA for 2022/23 Opened on October 1st, 2021!
Yesterday I attended a webinar hosted by FAFSA.gov to go over the changes. You can see the slide deck here.
The biggest changes seem to be:
- Eligibility updates: Drug convictions no longer hinder students’ ability to qualify for federal student aid! Prior drug convictions and Selective Service Registration will not affect a student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Questions about both of these items will still be asked, however.
- New Jersey Residents: Starting in 2022, New Jersey will no longer participate in the Auto Zero or Simplified Needs Test programs, so all NJ residents will now have to fill out the entire FAFSA form.
- Tax-related changes: IRS no longer includes references to virtual currency (i.e. cryptocurrency) as part of Schedule 1 or uses the form IRS 1040 NR-EZ, so sections related to these items have been revised.
- User experience changes: FAFSA.gov and the myStudentAid app have been streamlined and modernized to make them easier to navigate. It should also be easier for students to start an application and then parents to log-in sign off on it. *Note: While parents just need one FSA ID, each child in the family attending college will need their own FSA ID)
Between October 19th and 21st, 2021 FAFSA.gov will be hosting a series of webinars. These include line-by-line walkthroughs of the form, for anyone who has questions or concerns about filling it out. This is highly recommended for anyone navigating the financial aid process for the first time. Register for the webinars here.
You can also check out the [FAFSA Youtube channel](Federal Student Aid - YouTube) for helpful videos, like these ones on how to create an FSA ID and updates to the myStudentAid app.
The Federal FASFA deadline is June 30th, 2022, but each state has it’s own deadlines for state-specific grants and scholarships. I went through the list of FAFSA deadlines by state and pulled a list of deadlines for each state. It starts with states with 2022/2023 FAFSA deadlines that fall in 2021, and then moves onto states with deadlines in 2022 and 2023. I added links to any state-specific grants that were mentioned. (Tip: do a command+F search to find your state)
