2023 Gardening Thread

I watched the farmer friend who gives us space for a church giving garden use one of those this week. It did quickly chop the leafy weeds. But not sure it pulls up the roots the same way hand weeding wood. She has been advising us to leave the dead weeds on the garden surface, let them rot back into the soil.

Yes, daylily flowers are edible! We had no idea until we saw a dish with daylily petals at the Herbfarm garden with a sign explaining they were tasty in salads!

Only if they will not produce seeds while wiltingā€¦ some like pop weed and dandelions can do that!

My open faced radish sandwich! I baked the bread and grew the radish, arugula and chives (you can eat the chive flowers too!). Did not churn the butter.

Listen I just followed the recipe! Just happened to be the time the chives are bloomed and any plate is better with a few olives!
Flaky sea salt on the butter - next time a little more butter I think!

Tonight I had garden chives on a potato with sour cream. It was tasty (along with pork chops cooked in cast iron skillet, but thatā€™s a topic for different thread  ) Methinks everything tastes better after a day of hard work, and I was hungry from a few hours of gardening.

Lots of accomplishments today! I am headed out for wedding trip in a week, and I wanted to get some more things planted. (Hiring a neighbor kid to water). Today I purchase and planted:

  • a small flat of purple petunias
  • a small flat of tall orange marigolds
  • a purple verbena plant, into a planter for the stoop
  • basil
  • kale
  • zucchini
  • yellow squash
  • tomatoes x3 (2 big plants, one small)

It would have been a little easier if not for a big pile of chipped limbs we opted to keep, piled in one of the veggie garden areas.

I intend to plant some more after back home in a few weeks. But for now Iā€™m back to maintenance mode.

Figs are starting to ripen. Birds already discovered them so Iā€™m covering them with organza bags.

Great reviews on that weeding tool @abasket. I might get one. I was out every day this weekend and I swear weeds pop up every day in these beds!

Had a good gardening week/weekend. Got two beautiful hydrangeas from our local Costco and planted them in front of the house, on either side of the front steps. They seem to be doing well - keeping my fingers crossed.

Got the vegetable garden laid out and planted all the veggies yesterday. Mostly tomatoes, but some cucumber, eggplant and herbs. The rabbits usually get to my peppers and herbs - but thereā€™s a fox in our area right now - hoping that saves my plants

Also got a new bed near our retaining wall going. The bareroot roses I planted are finally showing some signs of life. Got some sedum to go over the wall and got this bed mulched.

Very tiring, but satisfying weekend.

My chives have pretty purple flowers. I was wondering about whether to prune them. Was surprised to learn they are edibleā€¦. has anybody tied that?

They are edible! I they have a mild chive/garlic taste. Put in salads or top at the end of a stir fry. I had some this week.

Editing to say that many herbs that get a flower itā€™s often advised to top them off so that they donā€™t take too much growing energy from the herb itself - think basil and the white flowers it gets. Unless you want to collect the seeds - like the coriander seeds from cilantro plants.

Along these lines I also clipped my first couple of garlic scapes yesterday from my garlic plants - same idea, donā€™t want the scapes to take growth energy from the plant. And they last well chopped in the refrig or freezer and make excellent pesto or use in stir fries, etc.

My tomato is already flowering and has two green tomatoes on it. I havenā€™t had this happen before. I pinched off the blooms that were there last night but so far have left the two tomatoes.

New strawberry plants are looking good.

The most exciting is that I have several asparagus sprouts. A year ago I planted seed and just one or two tiny fronds came up. This year I dug it up and put in some crowns and also a potted plant of it in case those didnā€™t come. I now have 6-7 sprouts, of which I think 2 came from last yearā€™s seed as theyā€™re not in line with where the crowns are.

it has been unseasonably cool here for weeks. Beautiful days, lots of sun, but chilly nights and many days not cresting 70 degrees. My tomato plants are definitely not happy. At best, some of them seem to just be cooling their heels, awaiting warmth to get going. A couple of them really donā€™t look good, at all.

On the other hand, one bonus to the prolonged cool weather is that I havenā€™t had to buy salad greens of any sort for at least six weeks (and we eat salad every day).

Iā€™m afraid our already expensive produce costs are going to get even worse with the less than good growing conditions in many parts of the country. We are almost three weeks without rain and May, one of the most rainy months of the year only netted .5 inches. We have sun and warmth but almost too much (if thatā€™s possible!) Plants sometimes need a cloudy day to reset!

Iā€™ve been picking lots of arugula - the first time Iā€™ve ever planted it. Iā€™ve wondered how long it will produce.

Iā€™m loving the not-super-hot temps here. Just ate this 70 gram fig for dessert at lunch today! Have had to put organza bags on the fruit so the birds donā€™t eat them all.

Can someone tell me what this is? It has been popping up in a couple of my garden beds for years, though I have no memory of planting it.
