@ziveli513 At my kids high school, a 90% would be a B+ and thus a 3.3 GPA. A 93% is an A- or a 3.8 and at 95% is an A and a 4.0. So a 4.0 at my kids high school is completely different than at the neighboring school where an A is a 90%. If my kids got all 90%, they would have a 3.3 GPA. This is why even UW is not equal and PSU converts to their scale. Itâs also why the weighting scale works in my kids favor.
@lucyvanpelt answered correctly in what I was trying to say. If the scale is out of 4.0, thatâs unweighted. I have always believed that the GPAâs published are already converted to Penn Stateâs scale - but I have nothing in writing to say that and others strongly believe itâs weighted. However, UW is the only thing that makes sense to me in my opinion for the exact reasons of the different scales. But to throw another wrench in completely, I was once told by an admissions rep that they donât only compare you among schoolsâŠthey also compare applicants to other applicants from their own school and what rigor and GPA they have based on what is available at their school.
While some school might have their highest scale available at a 5, that does not mean that their 4.0+ is out of 4.0. It means itâs out of 5. Penn State asks what is the highest GPA available at your school. This way they know that your 4.0 is not a perfect GPA and is in fact out of something higher.
I donât have all of the answersâŠNo one here does. However, we have pretty educated guesses based on previous experience and information brought to this page by others. Can it change tomorrow? Yup.
@yoa2001 They have modified rolling admission. This means that if you apply by a certain date you will hear by a certain date. If you applied early November, you will either be admitted, denied or deferred to regular decision by Dec 24. It does seem that they release acceptances in wavesâŠas the decision deadline gets closer they will release more decisions daily. All you can know at this point is you will get some sort of decision by Dec 24.
@amomoffour Yes, I was surprised as well but when I logged into the portal the next day to make sure everything was submitted properly, it said my decision was made and that I was admitted. Admissions had always said that it takes about 2-4 weeks for a decision but for some reason it was a lot quicker
@specialist009 call admissions first thing tomorrow!
No one here can do anything but guess even if itâs an educated guess
If yes you can switch Iâm sure you have to ask ASAP
Good luck and congrats. Not surprised you are accepted right away to a branch campus with such high stats
@Specialist009 : call first thing today and say you made a mistake and wanted to be considered for UP.
If youâre worried about getting used to college, see if you can do summer session. If you can afford it itâs worth it because it creates a small group of friends, gets you used to college learning before the fall, and makes the campus more familiar, so that when Fall comes around youâre used to it all and hit the ground running.
(Thereâs even a Paterno Fellow group so that the summer classes dont replicate the Schreyer seminars).
Considering your stats youâd be better served at UP in terms of intellectual challenge.
If Penn State only accepted those in the top 25% they would have terrible yield. Again, according to my childâs Naviance kids got in with averages ranging from B+ to A+ (weighted). You do not have to be Ivy material to get in. Iâm talking about Univ Park specifically. Iâve said it before, but 49 kids applied and 31 got accepted.
Such great conversations here! We all know, thereâs no crystal ball for admissions. What I BELIEVE she meant was itâs unlikely the people with stats in the media range of their acceptable scores has been admitted already to UP. I think everything can factor in, like reading 3/4 of their admission was based on GPA. I think they will start admitting in waves soon. She did NOT say that people would be waiting without any information given through January. Itâs not the first time that PSU has needed to assess GPA and weighted vs. unweighted. I think if your grades are good, youâll be fine!
I think the point was, the applicants above AND below the middle 50% (the easy decisions) were given decisions. The middle 50% (less easy decisions) will have to wait a bit longer. And as @jlhpsu has mentioned dozens of times, the only promise made by PSU was an answer by Dec 24.
@citymama9 I didnât mean that psu would only accept top 25%
It seems clear now that the students accepted to date are top 25% from what @amomoffour
Was told by admissions
Thatâs actually helpful to know
As we wait
Itâs not that penn state is so overwhelmed with applications (Ohio state accepted my daughter after only 8 weeks, as big and as selective as psu main)
Waiting since mid August for up
And it does seem that a pattern is developing so far early action
Top stats hear quickly, sometimes within days, regardless of when they applied
So applicants can be processed quickly
Those of us in the middle 50% (especially higher end) still have good chance
But even if we applied in August like my d, higher stats are being accepted first
I can live with that
Looking at 2022 decisions thread too many people posted results without giving date applied to see
But Iâm guessing it might really be determined by when you applied and then when the wave gets to your stats level
Dec 24, we can still get a deferred to regular decision which will be frustrating but not a problem if stats are in good range
But that still means good chance if stats are in range
This is the same as itâs been every year even without the early action. Definite yeses MIGHT hear earlier, definite noâs might hear earlier. But it is also true that very high stats will hear at the very end too. In fact, you will see some very very high stat people get in at the very end of the deadline. There is literally no rhyme or reason. It may seem like there is right now because so many of the applicants who have heard are high stats, but in the end, you will see people with the exact same stats that waited a long while.
Early action has changed some of this only to the point that very high stats students MIGHT hear in a few days, which was not the case in regular decision.
The average GPA for all freshman admitted last year was a 3.58 GPA. Penn State is competitive, but not Ivy League and not impossible by any means. The admissions process frustrates many but is better than many schools who notify every applicant at the same time in March!
