Does anyone know approx how many students are accepted? I think I saw somewhere that approx 7500 enroll as freshmen but if they received 55000 early action apps I am curious as to how many of those will be acceptances in UP? And wonder if 55000 ea is only for UP or all campuses?
@krabbiek, hereās a link to the common data set that outlines that info. Itās just for UP.
https://budget.psu.edu/CDSRedesign/cds.aspx?reportindicator=FreshAdmn&Location=UP&AY=20172018
Basically, about 56K students applied to University Park last year. Of those, 28K were accepted and about 7600 enrolled. Itās likely the decision to offer early action and applications via common app has increased overall applications. Will be interesting to see next yearās numbers. Common app makes it very easy for kids to apply to more colleges.
@krabbiek According to the Common Data Set for University Park https://budget.psu.edu/CDSRedesign/cds.aspx?reportindicator=FreshAdmn&Location=UP&AY=20172018
About 28,233 students are accepted out of 56,114 applicants. From that it shows that only about 7,832 freshmen choose to enroll.
In that case I think the 51% acceptance rate is accurate then.
@MelioraScott No, they arenāt.
OP - your ACT score is within the middle 50% but test scores only account for 1/3 of your application consideration. 2/3 is your GPA. And your GPA is at the 25% meaning 75% of people who get in have a higher GPA.
You are borderline. Did you put summer option?
Thanks @Sophley and @collegegirl2023 -
for the cliff notes on numbers- thatās crazy that only approx 1/4 accept but makes sense due to the high number of applicants. It was just crazy to hear that already 55000 applied for EA but it is true that common app makes it easier!
My daughter got a post card in the mail for PSU. It said that early action they are trying to notify by 24th of December and that they only update once a day its best to check first thing in the morning.
Not according to their CDS. The bins are large, but he is at the top of the āPercent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49ā. That puts a 3.46 around the 35th percentile. The 28 puts him/her around 70th percentile. Both scores are within the middle 50%.
Does Penn State put out the acceptances daily or specific days?
please chance for UP Information sciences and tech college
Stat:
28 ACT
3.55 Weighted / 3.46 UW
when does the portal update decisions everyday??? midnight? early morning?
My message on the portal just changed to this;
āYour application has been updated. Please check back soon for a status updateā
First Iāve seen of this. Hopefully good news coming soon!!! Anyone else have the same thing happen?
We just had a Portal changeā¦ not the famous error kind but hopefully a positive outcomeā¦ the waiting game is coming to an end soon. This is what appears now in the window below the main photo:
Application Status
Your application has been updated. Please check back soon for a status update.
fingers crossed!

Has anyone actually been rejected or put on a waitlist?
@meliorascott , You are correct that there is some discrepancy in the data. Hereās a link to the statistics they post on the admissions page:
https://admissions.psu.edu/apply/statistics/
This shows that a 3.55 is at the bottom of the middle 50th percentile ā¦ so basically anything below a 3.55 would be the bottom 25th percentile. At that stage, Penn State would be a reach. Not sure why PSUās own data doesnāt match up.
Are the stats cited two different academic years?
@jakeybake A few hours before receiving the acceptance, several of us saw the portal change to a similar message with a photo of the lion shrine instead of Old Main. There is talk of this on the āwaiting for decisionsā thread. Feel free to hop over there so that this thread can be used for the actual decisions.
@Sophley Do you think that 25% of UP students have straight As through all four years of school? That seems highly doubtful. I assume CDS is reporting unweighted and that admissions page is weighted.
C12. Average high school GPA of all degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who submitted GPA: 3.58
That number jives with the other data reported on the CDS.
Our HS uses Naviance and we have had 237 students apply to PSU. The average UWGPA of acceptance was 3.51. Very close to 3.58. Average WGPA was 4.06, which would explain a 3.97 75% point on that admissions page, witha slight bias in accepting our students from a strong OOS school.
@InfiniteWaves Thanks so much! Fingers crossed!!!
