Am really freaking out that should have applied DUS
Got reply here on cc yesterday from a mom whose daughter had stronger stats than mine

missed acceptance to Eberly by .07!

Also the mom said Eberly is notorious for late notice and tough scrutiny for acceotance

Even though it’s pre major at this stage!

Ugh
We are trying to decide between pitt (where she was accepted in September for Dietrich science after 4 weeks review) and hopefully psu up

I am going to call Monday and ask admissions at psu if switching major to DUS now would nullify early action

Would it mean regular decision automatically since still ok for nov 30

Might be worth it, I don’t mind the wait if she has a reasonable shot which her stats seem to indicate based on psu info of past students

Anyone else have specific Eberly acceptance info from previous years?

So far I have been told here on cc not to worry by various posters based on her stats

But none of them cited actual Eberly acceotance experiences

Thank you!

Sorry fir the long post but easier to skip over if you are not interested

@ziveli513 I have 2 that went, 1 waiting for acceptance, this one has slightly higher stats, different SAT measurement, I honestly think you’ll be fine. I think Eberly does take longer typically, if you look at other sites, there was only 20 acceptances out of the 50K received. Don’t worry, if stats are middle of the typical acceptance pack

Thanks @amomoffour Except sad1010 said her daughter missed by .07 to be accepted to Eberly last year

And her stats are higher than my d

I can’t see any drawback to switching to DUS

Do you?

Since she can still take all the pre major chem classes she needs as a DUS

@ziveli513 I would say you should ask, just make sure you get through to the appropriate admissions personnel, not a student. There has been such a small percentage of acceptances so far, this is the first year with EA, which could really slow things down a bit. Call Monday, what could it hurt?

Thanks. I will ask first

@ziveli513 Most likely switching now will put her in the back of the line. But definitely call and ask
you never know! I’m curious
how does your friend know what they missed Eberly acceptance by? Penn State doesn’t usually have hard and concrete cut offs.

@SAD1010 saw my post and replied with the info about her experiences with Eberly
I don’t know how she knows but she was detailed in her reply

Maybe she asked after her daughter was declined?

@jlhpsu Back of the line? If people apply in November and have gotten an answer a few days later, I think date order is less relevant

But I’ll ask admissions Monday. They were closed today for weather

@ziveli513 Very possible. Sometimes after a denial, the school will give you more information as to why they were denied
especially if there is an appeal process. That would be a hard pill to swallow for sure. I still think your daughter is fine, but you can call to ease your mind. The admissions people are usually pretty helpful.

@jlhpsu I was ready to wait after being reassured by you and others earlier
But then sad1010 had specific info from Eberly decline with higher stats than my daughter
That scares me!

And since there is no negative to applying DUS and taking all the chemistry pre major classes
 I think why not switch?

Waiting is hard but I thought we were waiting with a very reasonable expectation of getting accepted

I don’t want to make an error that causes a declined application

^ it’s probably a combination - it’s never such a clear cut thing as “.07”. It could be that one class was missing, for instance (they like as close to 20 honors+AP+IB+DE classes as possible, for Eberly they want bio+chem+physics+ one of those at the AP level, they prefer level 4 in a foreign language, math through precalculus honors or calculus
any of these could have tripped an applicant).
Another issue is whether the student you’re referring to applied and had their application complete including transcripts before November 30 or after. Students with application complete after the November 30 date get the spots not given to kids whose application was complete before Nov 30. Now, it means that kids who apply after Nov 1 get the leftover seats from the Aug-Oct crowds, then the kids who apply in January get whatever’s left. Two years ago I know a kid who applied in February for financial reasons with a strong curriculum, 1450 SAT, and 3.8 GPA was put in summer session, simply because most of the seats had been given out; he was clearly qualified but summer session was the only way for him to have space.
It always feels too long. It depends on many things but I’m certain your child will get in and you’ll hear by Dec 24.
Sit tight. It feels long - just read last year’s thread
parents and students were going through the same woes.
Do call, but when you call ask to talk to someone whose name can be found on the Admissions organigram, otherwise you’ll be given a student worker who just processes calls and whose answer is unreliable (read last year’s thread, too, on that issue).
If she is declined (and she won’t), you can STILL call the very same day and ask to be reconsidered for DUS, and they will.

@MYOS1634 thank you very much for your thorough reply!
Well, my d has all the math science and language classes you mentioned including her senior year schedule

I do recall we can ask to be reconsidered if declined

Sigh I guess I will just wait and not switch

I hope everyone who said she’s probably getting into Eberly is right

But I will call on Monday

@jlhpsu @InfiniteWaves @STEM2017 @SAD1010 @amomoffour
Just got email d accepted at Ohio state university as chemistry major!
Largest campus in country, 51,000 plus

And still waiting on psu where we applied weeks earlier

But so excited now to have pitt and Ohio state. Hope penn state since it’s her heart’s desire

@ziveli513 Congratulations on tOSU!!! Great school. Go visit if you haven’t. You’ll be amazed.

My S19 still waiting. :frowning:

D is still waiting as well and her application was submitted in August.

FWIW she’s only heard of one kid from her PA high school that has been admitted so far - and PSU usually accepts around 150+ kids.

It will happen

@STEM2017 thank you!!! Good luck to your s19!

Anyone here also applied for Schreyer?
