2024 Penn State Schreyer Honors College Discussion

Hey guys, I hadn’t seen a thread for 2024 yet so I made on so we could have a discussion. Schreyer is probably my top choice and I am very nervous for my decision!

Does Penn State stack scholarships? Say Provost plus Schreyer if admitted? Thanks

@Sxofus,
no idea. Did you apply to Schreyer also?

Yes

Does anyone know when decisions come out?

Mid February.

anyone want to chance each other?

How many of you conducted interviews? I did one online through video chat.

@hotsauce240 , i did also through video. Do you know if it has a large impact on your decision?

@PurpleLlama066 , website indicates that interviews aren’t required.

Doing chances for Schreyer isn’t easy as it’s not based on stats necessarily but rather the quality of your essay responses, from what I’ve read on this forum several times. I’ve known NMFs get rejected while kids with above average stats gain acceptance, but that’s just anecdotal. I believe Schreyer publishes the stats of accepted students, but those students aren’t selected because of their stats. They just happen to have really high stats.

My son applied but I doubt he will get accepted. Not to be a Debbie Downer. Just being realistic. They want students from diverse backgrounds who can contribute to a global student community. As a result, they aren’t likely to take a significant number of students from the same area, especially students from the local school district. When my son went to the interview, he already knew nearly every candidate in the waiting area because there were so many local kids trying for it. I would worry about the same thing for those candidates from the northern VA area or Philly suburbs. From what I’ve heard, the last thing they want is a sea of sameness at Schreyers.

@Sophley, lol I am from the Philly suburbs, only had like 5 applicants from my school though.

@PurpleLlama066 I don’t think it helps too much but certainly a small margin

SHC is really the last big factor that my DS is waiting for. He is deferred at Michigan, but I think it may be turning into less of a serious consideration, so that decision may not matter as much.

If accepted into SHC, I think it may tip the scales. If not, then PSU is still a serious contender, just not a slam dunk.

I had a nephew who got into SHC years ago from philly burbs, so it IS possible :slight_smile:

Good luck to all.

@snakster,
same situation for me, also deferred at michigan and shc will prob tip scales for me too, if just regular for me then i may choose pitt honors over.

When will decisions be released for Schreyer?

@snakster,
similar to my S’s situation, he was accepted by Purdue and SHC is really a big factor for PSU.

my essays were super quirky, hopefully it pays off I kind of took a risk, lol

@HokieCrazy,
Usually in mid of February, last year was on 2/19 if my memory is correct.

@HokieCrazy @cwstrees You will receive an email from SHC with the exact date and time that the portal will be updated. I don’t know if it will be as early as 2/19, but I think they are aiming for before March. I’ve heard there was a pretty significant increase in number of applicants (due to its placement on the Common App), so it may take them longer to weed through them all?

Keep in mind that your essays will be read by professors wondering if you’d bring something unique to their seminar - depth of analysis beats quirky though.
