2060 SAT. Can I Get Merit Aid?

Hi, I am a junior with a 2060 SAT (740 Math, 660 CR, 660 Writing. I took it again yesterday so my score may improve a little bit. I am also likely to be in the top ten percent of my class. I have been looking at schools to apply to where I would have a chance for a merit based scholarship. I know I qualify for University of Alabama but I was wondering if I would be a likely candidate for any scholarships at other schools. I am looking at bigger atmosphere universities and would like to get the cost of attendance under 30k if possible.

I’d start here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/211927-institutional-merit-based-scholarships-full-tuition.html</a></p>

Oh, and this should be pretty useful too: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html</a></p>

Note that many times when it says something like 1500 SAT required, they mean 1500/1600.

I’m not really thinking full ride just somewhere that I would have a chance at a few thousand dollars.

buffalove…more info needed. DD received $6000 in merit aid from a school that cost $50K a year…is that what you are looking for? Or are you looking for merit aid at a school that costs much less than that?

Read the thread by momfromtexas…it’s about full ride scholarships but you know…that’s not a bad thing either.

Well I would like to get COA around 30k so either a small scholarship from a decent public or a larger from a private.

In what state do you live? OOS tuition brings most OOS publics up to $50K.

What’s your GPA? Also, what did you score on the first 2 sections of the SAT? I can help you weed through some of those merit scholarships if you give us that info.

Thank you. I live in New York. I have a 3.62 UW GPA with all AP or advanced classes. My SAT was a 1400 on Math and CR. The OOS Publics I have been looking at are Pitt, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. They all have a COA of around 35k.

It sounds like you are eligible for some merit aid at many schools. Here are just a few:

[U.S</a>. Scholarships & Grants | Niagara University](http://www.niagara.edu/u-s-scholarships-grants/)

Out of state COA here is about 26k and it sounds like you’re eligible for $12500 per year for two years.
[Utah State University](<a href=“Tuition Costs & Financial Aid | Admissions | USU”>Tuition Costs & Financial Aid | Admissions | USU)

COA here is 30something K per year. You’d also get into their Honors College.
http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html</a></p>

COA here is about 35k. If you’re in the top 10% at your school you could get over 13k in merit.
http://www.carrollu.edu/prospective/scholarships.asp</a></p>

COA here is 39k, but you could get 17k per year in merit (or 18k if you can bump up that GPA, since I assume they mean unweighted).
http://www.maryvillecollege.edu/admissions/finaid/scholarships-awards/first-year/</a></p>

COA here is 27k ish. If you can bump up that GPA you could get about 7k per year.

Are you looking for merit scholarships for schools ranked higher than Bama (which is currently at #79), and would give you free tuition with a 1400+ SAT and a 3.5+ GPA (so remaining cost would be about $10k-12k per year for room, board, books, etc.).

Certainly you can find scholarships at schools ranked lower than Bama, but that doesn’t make much sense if the cost would be higher.

If you’re looking for good-sized scholarships at schools ranked higher, you might look at Indiana U. They have a $9k per year, which brings cost down to $30k. [Automatic Academic Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.scholarships.indiana.edu/scholarships/automatic/index.php)

oops - edited to add…you’d need a 3.8 unweighted to get that Indiana University scholarship. :frowning:

hmmm…I don’t know if your GPA is going to be a problem at higher ranked schools.

I wouldn’t really mind going to a lesser ranked school if I could get a large scholarship. I feel like Alabama is a school that I would feel totally out of place at and doesn’t fit my personality at all. What lesser ranked schools possibly out of the top 100 would I maybe be able to get good merit aid?

maybe Univ of San Diego…a private school in Calif.

What is your personality so that we will know what schools are better fits for you.

Thanks for the suggestion you have really been a huge help mom2college kids. I am looking for a more liberal, laid back, peaceful school. I guess that you could say I am a hippie. I am looking for a non-religious affiliated school with a small Greek life but still good school spirit through athletics.

Looking at your name, U of Buffalo is a backyard choice. There is an automatic scholarship for your SAT score and the SUNYs have a low sticker price as it is.

maybe UDel? I don’t know what it’s Greek life is like, but I think they do give good merit scholarships.

idk if this helps, but i had similar scores (2090 in one take, 2140 superscored). my gpa was 3.9 uw and 4.5 w, essays and ecs were decent but not spectacular.

here are the schools where i got merit aid and the rough amounts:
duquesne (12k)
hofstra (19k)
fordham (22k)
st johns (full tuition, about 35k)
arcadia (23k)
the king’s college nyc (17k)
drexel (18k)
lycoming (20k)
manhattan (15k)
houghton (12k)
bloomsburg (3k)

drexel, lycoming, and arcadia were all pretty generous with need-based grants too. bloomsburg and duquesne were not.

hope that helps :)

OP has stated before that EFC is about $20,000.
