I've applied to an american college being european. I took an exchange year after 9th grade and a sabatical after my senior year making me 20 years now. Meaning I would have just turned 21 as a freshman in college ( a small liberal arts school). Is that a problem or very unusual?

You would be older than the average college freshman (17-19) but the age gap is not so big that it should result in social difficulties.

Considering that European students usually place out of intro courses, you will likely start your college career with upper-level courses that are taken by students your own age.

One of my friends is 21 and I’m 17 (turning 18 in soph year). We’re both freshmen internationals and no one notices that he’s older than most and I’m younger than most. I don’t see any problem with being 21 and in your first year of college. It’s actually more of an advantage since you’re the more experienced.

It’ll be fine. Probably better than fine, since being able to buy alcohol will make you VERY popular.
