21 Yrs Old, Mech Engineering - International Student

Hey guys!

Well I am looking for some stone cold advise here.. what are my chances of getting into a good or decent school given I am 21 years old and would like to pursue a Mechanical Engineering Degree?? O and did I mention I will need a scholarship and I am an International Student!!

Here are some schools I checked they offer International Aid and it is pretty good aid too:

Arizona State University (AZ)
University of Arizona (AZ)
Univ. of Miami (FL)
University of Kentucky (KY)
Univ. of South Florida (FL)
Boston University (MA)
Ohio State University (OH)
George Wash. Univ. (DC)
Louisiana State University
Louisiana Tech
University of Texas at Dallas
University of Texas at Arlington
Texas A&M University
California State University, Long Beach
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
University of Southern California

Thanks in advance guys!! Be blunt I have had some health setbacks among other things in my life and it is time to get going and get that degree!!

Thanks for the advise once again!!

Wait… those colleges offer good financial aid to international students? Are you looking at athletic scholarships?

Well no, aid in general… I checked them all out at collegeboard.com and they offer good aid to us International Students…

wouldn’t it be more helpful if you actually posted your stats ? you said you were 21 ? colleges are definitely going to ask about what you’ve been doing since you graduated high school…

OP, some of the schools you list (BU, USC) may offer some financial aid (but you’d still be expected to cover a huge portion of the total costs). But I think many others on your list will not be able to offer you much at all. Long Beach State, for example, is a public school and like most public colleges in California, in dire financial straits. That is, broke! Cal States, community colleges and CUs all look to foreign students for much needed hard cash.

Well I worked for some time and I had to get some medical help…

JaKingful, the numbers on Collegeboard are irrelevant to you. You need to research each individual university on your list and find out whether they have financial aid that you qualify for. If all of the university’s financial aid to international students is in the form of athletic scholarships, it’s of no use to you. If the university grants out-of-state tuition waivers to international students who graduated from a public in-state high school, you won’t qualify.

b@r!um Thanks for the advice, anyone else??

Most of the universities in your list are public. And remember, most public universities DO NOT provide financial aid to international students. Go to the universities’ respective websites to get the details.

I would suggest you also look into these universities
Lehigh University
Rice
Northwestern

If your SAT scores are very good (2100+), then look into these as well
Columbia
Tufts
Dartmouth
