I got a 213 on my PSAT this year as a sophmore: 80 in math, 64 in reading, and 69 in grammar. I want to score at least a 225-230 next year as a junior when it actually counts for national merit. Should I be really worried about not making it? A lot of the seniors in my school tell me not to worry, that I'll make it. But, I am still worried...In what ways can I enhance my score to achieve my full potential?

You are worrying way too much. I got a 208 as sophomore, 226 as a Junior, and 2310 on my January Junior SAT. You will go up. What state are you? 213 might be enough. Again, don't worry; you're only a Sophomore

wow. Dude that's terrible! A 208!!! you're screwed.

213 as sophomore is very very good. I didn't even take PSAT as a sophomore (I regret it), but I got 221 as a junior.

My method of getting a higher score, which you can choose to use if you want to deal with the stress, is to do every possible practice test 2 weeks before the exam. It works for me.

If you want old-fashioned methods, just read the New York Times, pay close attention in class, and use the blue book to get ready.

I live in Coppell, Texas.

Umm yes 213, 99th percentile for a soph is just bad

my god

You serious?

Actually, it was 98 percentile for me.

On the contrary, a 213 is fine. However, if you are interested in HYPM or the like, it needs to be raised some. Relax, you're ony a sophomore in H.S. Next year it will get better, if for nothing else but the experience of taking it this year. Math is strong, concentrate on grammar and reading comp. Hang in there!

What is HYPM?

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT

Ah k thanks.

Any ideas as to where you might apply yet?

As far as Nat. Merit it all depends on your individual state scores, but only when taken in your junior year.

I am looking at:

Brown, Rice, UT, UT Southwestern

Those are my main ones right now.

213 as a sophomore is good. You'll probably improve next year, and your score is good enough for Brown, Rice, UT, and UT Southwestern.

I got a 199 sophomore year and 235 junior year.

I've just been pushed passed my breaking point. I cannot believe that people in the 99th percentile, such as this fine original poster, are unable to figure out that their score is plenty good enough for top schools. Now don't get me wrong, a 2130 is an "average" score at top schools, but my god this kid is a sophomore. He has a year and a half to improve! I heard him say that it was only the 98th percentile- but that is among juniors- kids a year older than him. Based on the complete stupidity of the posters on this forum, I regret to say that the SAT in no way measures intelligence, competence, or common sense.

I scored a 214 as a sophomore and a 232 as a junior. You'll be fine, honestly.

Icedragonad, I actually skipped a grade, so I am a year younger for my grade...2 years younger than all the juniors.
