Is this a below average score for MIT? I did get a perfect 800 on the Math section though...My mom says I didn't do so well on the english section cause I studied most of my elementary school in another country where english was a second language...but still, no excuses I guess.

Well, they don’t care about the writing so don’t worry about that section.
Your SAT sounds decent…math is the most important for MIT, obviously. I’m going to guess your critical reading SAT is in the mid- to high-600’s, which is respectable even for MIT.

640 on CR…yeah

I’d retake it. And I’m pretty sure they do look at Writing. It’s definitely below-average at MIT, so you probably don’t want any gaping flaws in your application…Most people I know with 2300+ that applied were rejected, so don’t give them the chance to see any flaws in your app.

With a 800 in math, you’re smart enough to increase your CR score. Study over the summer and take it the first chance you get (unless you still need to do SAT II’s).

chillax. the sun’s shining outside go play!

and really, no, they don’t look at writing.

ok…two really contrasting opinions.
who should I listen to?

The head of the admissions office, Stu Schmill, has stated publicly that they don’t think the writing SAT section is an indicator of anything. I don’t remember his exact wording of his statement. Probably you can find it if you do some googling. Or maybe someone else can find the link.

As for you verbal/critical reading score, it is ok–not great. If you want to retake it, then I guess it might help if your score goes up to 700+. However, if it will take time away from something else, like a research project, don’t bother. It might be worth it for other schools, though.

I wouldn’t be terribly worried, I was admitted EA and scored 2050 total (Math 750 / CR 690 / Writing 610). But then again, I did score 800 on the Math 2 and 780 on the Chemistry SAT2.

I’m fairly certain that they don’t look at writing, but if I were you I would study a bit and retake to bring up the CR score, if only so that if you are rejected and you didn’t retake it, you won’t spend the rest of your life wondering if that’s part of what caused a rejection.

If English was your second language, take a look at the SAT score report and see whether the majority of your errors lie within the vocabulary section. If so, consider taking the ACT instead of the SAT.

MIT does not currently look at the writing score. They’ve been collecting stats for the past few years, trying to see if the writing score does anything for their evaluation process, so it’s not out of the question that they might start considering it in the future, but they do not currently consider it.

The only thing I don’t get is if they didn’t look at Writing, why would they require the Writing Component for people who took the ACT?

They’re currently collecting the scores so they can do analysis on the usefulness of the writing section. They aren’t used for evaluation, just for statistical purposes.

hrm, I was admitted early action and i got 2160 (M: 760 CR: 720 W: 680) exactly as yours, but I took it once. But my math was the highest score, but luckily, my writing was my lowest score…

so u can retake it if you want to.
