“22 for 22” List

Or “lose 22 pounds”.

As the century counts higher and higher, that’s a good way of doing it.

My SIL posted this for today and I thought of this thread.

mathmom - that’s great!

I love the ‘less anger’ frame.

I love all the frames, but I smiled most at “Worse Dancing”. Here’s to a 2022 where we can all do what makes us feel happy, even if it’s not perfect.

I’m going with “No regrets”.

I’m pulling more weeds and being more collaborative with H and kids.

I will try reading 22 books. That sounds do-able.

Will try making 22 new things—have made 3 so far.

Joined a research study that will last over 22 weeks.

Will add to the list.

Will exercise at least 22 minutes/day.
Will see at least 22 movies.

Wow. 22 things? I could never even remember them.

Three is a pretty good number of goals for me although I will stretch to five.

Since our kids were little, over New Years, we have created what we call a Time Capsule that allows for some reflection on the past year and thoughts for the New Year. We start with stuff to remember our lives in the year (favorite food, favorite book, favorite movie, most common expression, favorite trips, favorite possessions, etc.) and move on to special relationships, who our friends were etc. Then, we ask about what we liked best in the year, our three accomplishments for the year, three skills learned, what made us happy in the year. Then we turn to the next year. Three things we would like to do in the new year, skills we would like to learn, places we would like to visit, things we would like to do with the family, three things we would like to do more of, three things we would like to do less of, who we want to be like, what we want to be when we grow up, how we see ourselves five years from now, what we will do to make ourselves happier in the new year than in the previous year, etc.

We review all the past years when we are together. The old ones are often sweet and very funny (ShawD’s big accomplishments one year were ordering from catalogs – by which she meant circling things on catalogs which were never ordered – and making fruit salad). Her competencies have grown. I mentioned to our financial advisor that ShawD is being offered the Medical Directorship of the clinic she works in and he said, “Wow. I guess she’s not 16 anymore.” (She’s 28.)

I’m glad you have those memories.

These aren’t goals as much as they are mini “happiness projects” - things that will make your life happier. And if you make an actual list - like in a document or file you don’t have to memorize them!

I make a calendar reminder
For the end of each month of the year.
Most months I then review the list to see what I’ve accomplished and that also reminds me of what is on my list!

The idea that they would make you happy I think is important. I wouldn’t have the exercise there, except that it is very close to what I was already doing. In 2020 I had go to an art museum once a month, but with Covid, it’s been much less. I went to the museum at Cornell and the Met once each last year. We joined the Met and I plan to go again as soon as the numbers go down as there is a show I want to see that will close in April if I remember correctly.

I might add, but here’s the start (stole 2 from Elizabeth on the podcast!).

  1. Move – or decide not to (we’ve been waffling for years)
  2. Go on a family vacation to a new place
  3. Start working with at least one new client
  4. Read 50 books
  5. Do at least one puzzle/month
  6. Meditate 3x/week
  7. Keep up with Pilates 2x/week
  8. Learn pickleball
  9. Re-start tennis lessons (stopped during pandemic)
  10. At least 3 college visits for D23
  11. Make at least one photo book
  12. Girls’ trip in spring
  13. Visit extended family (first time since 2019)
  14. Colonoscopy
  15. Shingles vaccine
  16. See 10 plays (I’m a volunteer usher)
  17. See an improv or comedy show
  18. Declutter – Goodwill drop off once a month
  19. Keep volunteering 1x/month

My prediction is that I’ll do about half… and one probably won’t be the photo book because that one rolls over every year!

We are the same person on that photo book…

But I hope we both try pickleball !!

I keep coming back to this thread, looking for inspiration. The reality is, I’m never going to come up with 22 things (or even a smaller list of things that include 22 in them). After the past few terrible years (which, for my family started in 2019 with my H’s cancer diagnosis), I have simply decided that my list of things to do in 2022 is going to look like this:

-Spend the money
-Eat the food(s)
-Take the trip(s)

More broadly speaking, the mantra is Don’t Postpone Joy

Your “22” is to tackle those important life happiness 3 items in 2022. Sometimes it boils down to exactly that - giving ourselves permission to enjoy the fruits of our blood, sweat and tears.

The 22 items is a jumping point - more importantly is realization of what makes you happy and including it more in your life!

I’m going to add number 15! I’ve been looking forward to that shot for years. I can finally get it this year. Same with #14 but I don’t think that will make me happy!

I’m guessing neither of those will make us particularly happy in the moment, but I’m hopeful that they will contribute to long-term health and happiness!

Getting my second single shot will give me some peace of mind, so there is that. I’m just waiting for the Omicron surge to go down before I enter a CVS or my doctor’s office.

Bumping up as 2022 wraps up. I actually did not attend to my list very often to make progress, admittedly. I did add some additional things after the above was posted.

But referring to the above items, my progress:
Pickle Ball - nope, couldn’t find a spot/good fit.
SRTT event - didn’t do an event but became active on the page with advice, support, etc.
Visit 3 new state parks - 2 I think!
Lentils - made a lentil dish. One. It was decent!
New volunteer gig: added a component/new gig to a place I already volunteer
Book Club - did not, regrettably. BUT, did read more books than previous year.
Time By Water - did make a point to walk, run, vacation near water. Still in search of that new home.
Retire? - nope, not happening yet. 65 is getting closer though!

I may start a 23 thread as I have some things in mind, but it will probably NOT be focused on 23 items!
