I'm a senior, and I'm wondering if I should take the SATs again on January 24th (applying to most of HYPSM). Most of my colleges do accept it that late. I got 670CR, 800M, 730W.
I score 770 on SAT II Literature on November, if it helps at all. Any advice?

No, I wouldn't bother. Focus on the other parts of your application. The SAT is just one aspect of the application.

no, for god's sake and your own sake no

NO. Just... no.
A 2200 is fine for the schools you want to apply to.

I mean, I've completed all the applications so I don't really have any other area to focus on. If I could bump it up 2300+, how much advantage would it give me?

No. 2200 sufficiently shows HYPSM that you have the aptitude to learn at their school... which is the sole point of the SAT. No school will reject you for a 2200.

Taking it again will make you look exactly how you don't want to look... like you're only obsessed with test scores.

And don't forget, you may not always get that 2300 you think you will. I got a 2200s the first time, and I took it again, and I strongly regret it. I bombed it, my score went down by 100+ points. And unfortunately for me, colleges have to see it, because I took my SAT IIs later and it was on my score report.

And especially for you, you got an 800 in Math. despite your 670 in CR, you got 770 in Lit, so that indicates no deficiency in critical reading. There's no reason whatsoever for you to take it again.

Don't stress yourself out by retaking. Your 770 on lit compensates for your lower critical reading score.

yea a waste, ur math basically negates the sorta low CR

if you are completely done with your app then it would be alright to try to focus on your SAT. I mean 2300 would help, but do it only if you have no other part to work on and you are really bored.

I would absolutely retake this particular 2200 for any ivy or equal.

The writing does not officially count at these schools and the 670CR is considerably below the median at them. The writing is also below their medians and 800M is very common in their applicant pools. Also, if you look at the CDSs for these schools, you'll see that those with 2300 and 2400 scores get into these schools at a MUCH higher rate.

2200 was the median at mid tier ivies last year meaning that it's not a strong score for an unhooked applicant.

I'm the opposite - 760 CR, 660 math (790 writing) - 2210. Similar scores, opposite sections of the test - and I'm not retaking it and neither should you! Once you reach the 2200 mark it's a sort of mark that you've reached/passed that puts you strongly in the running for those schools.

I agree with hmom5 - I'd retake. Basically, screw the math and just focus on CR in your preparation. That's what I did with my SAT, except it was the other way around. Even if you don't score a 2300 or above, a significant increase can help. I know people say 100 points is 2 or 3 questions' difference, but everything helps.

Keep in mind that you could have a bad day and your score could go DOWN 100 points or more. I would not retake.

My score went down 100 points during my retake and I made no improvement in any section. Hey, it happened to me and it could happen to you.

Why is everyone ignoring that a 670CR is well below median at the schools the OP is applying to and would make it difficult for an unhooked applicant to be admitted? And CR is the most 'critical' of the scores and most closely correlates with success in college of all the SAT scores. So I don't think a retake is anywhere near as risky as not retaking.

It is a total myth that any 2200 is enough for an ivy.

Well, if you only took it once then I don't see what you have to lose. Most schools discourage more than two test-sittings, but have no issue with taking the SAT twice. As long as you don't think that the first time was a fluke and that you can at least match your first results, then I'd say go for it.

don't listen to hmom. But yes retake it... for me, I'll pay you $300 via credit card. pm me and I'll send you my info.

i'm kind of in the same boat as you - 2180, CR 750, M 750, and W 680. it was my first try, so i'll probably retake...

So here's a probably dumb question. What if two writings of the SAT were poor, but the ACT is significantly higher? Does that compensate? My math score was really bad both times (I have excuses but it doesn't matter in the end) and I ended up with a 700W, 740CR, 710W. On the other hand I got a 34 on the ACT with a 12 Writing.
