For HYPS, nothing can make you a sure-fire admit. If you feel you can do better, try your hand at the test once more. 2230 is a great score, although it's arguably "inflated" by that 800 in writing. It must be admitted that you got above 700 in everything so that's a plus. It comes down to this, how much time do you have? If the answer to the first is a lot, you should retake, despite how much better you feel you can do. Also, if you feel you can do better, as I said before, retake. Your score is competitive, don't let anyone tell you it's not, but just make sure it represents your true potential! Congrats on the score again!

I agree with TokenAdult about the average SAT thing, I did not actually think of that, silly me! The OP's scores are in range.

Same question-in-reply-to-a-question as to the OP: what will your application have making it stand out besides test scores? (And, for both of you, just where do you want to go to college?)

"Would you say it's good enough for brown, dartmouth, upenn, pomona, or Northwestern?"

My daughter had a 2290 SAT and 35 ACT. She got in at Pomona but not at Brown. Clearly, there's a lot more to the selection process than simply test scores.

thanks guys but i know my scores are in range according to the common data sets but what I fear is that students that this data consists of are in the high end of one ection and potentially the low end of another while I am in the low end of both. that SAT score is after two sittings does it look bad to take it a third time? Also if i take the act and get a 33 or above could that in some way safeguard my SAT score

I would say 34+ ACT safeguards your SAT score. I would advise, if you really want to see a big increase in less time, take the SAT again. Taking the ACT's is like learning a new test. Take the SATs, remember schools superscore, and try to get 2300+. 2200 is a great score, competitive, but nothing special in a highly competitive pool. If you rely on your scores alone, get 2350+, however if you have a high GPA (3.8+ UW) aim for 2250+. Look, you are obviously bright, and you should know how much you can get out of retaking. Just remember, if you retake with the SAT's this should be your last time.

thanks fred well i've also taken the acts twice and i got a 32 both times without much studying so if i study up hopefully i'll be able to get a 34+ in june and if not then i think i'll retake the sats in october after i've sent in my scores to schools and if they increase then i'll send those scores too

yah....for ivies, you never know. two people from my school (top 10) got into stanford with a 2220. one of them also got into MIT.
