2250 first time, should I retake?

Sorry for posting another one of these threads :(

But anyway, I'm a sophomore who took the SAT in January for the first time.

I scored 2250:
M: 800
W: 720 (8 essay, 75 MC)
CR: 730

My CR score was completely unexpected. On the 3 practice tests (from BB) I did, I scored 780, 800, 800. Writing has always been my weakest area, so I'm not TOO disappointed in the 720, but I'm pretty upset about my essay score (will university's look at the essay subscore specifically?) I'm also kind of disappointed in my composite score, because I've always been a good test-taker (PSAT was 235+ (no prep), perfect SSAT)

I know a 2250 is okay, but I'm an asian female who's also international. I also feel like it's bad that 2 of my scores are below 750.

If I retake, I'm sure that I can pull up my CR, but I might also lose my 800 in Math (since I always make stupid mistakes). Is it worth it?

PS: I'm aiming for a score high enough for HYPSM. I haven't actually decided where I'd like to go yet, but I'd rather have an SAT score that is unnecessarily high than an SAT score that is too low.

Since it was your first time, I think it’s worth retaking. And I heard that colleges look at your actual sat essay, not only scores.

Re-take! :)

Guess what, that score will not keep you out of ANY of those schools. If you don’t make it in it will be for a different reason.

http://www.provost.harvard.edu/institutional_research/CDS_2011-2012_Final.pdf

retake it!!!

You have a score high enough for HYPSM. Don’t retake it.

PS Colleges do not see your Writing essay for the SAT.

I vote 2250-One and done. GL.

Not taking it again would be really DUMB. Of course you should take it again.

You’re a sophomore, so take it again during junior year. Improving your essay score (and thus your writing score) isn’t too difficult IMO.

Retake it. There are good chances that you will raise your CR and Writing scores. Your math 800 is still there when colleges consider the super scores.

I would retake it if you are shooting at the most selective schools. As others noted, most schools will superscore, which means that you’ve locked in the 800 in math.

retake. Your essay brought down your W score, so that can easily be raised. Just check out some prep books on writing the essays.

yeah you took it sophomore year so i’d suggest taking it next year again and shoot for at least a 2300+. then you won’t worry about your SAT score keeping you out of the top colleges.

Wait until Spring of your junior year to decide whether you should retake, and ensure that everything is in order with regard to your other application items beforehand. Do not get the cart before the horse; the SAT is far and away not the most important factor. Good luck with admissions, babe.

Thanks for all the replies!
I’ll probably retake it sometime next year, and focus mostly on my essay and CR.

Definitely retake it. I had a 2210 my first time, 670 R 770 M 770 W. I was debating retaking it until my guidance counselor reminded me that many scholarships look for competitive SAT scores. That, and my Critical Reading score was bothersome. On my second try, despite being in a gymnasium with 300 other kids and a car alarm repeatedly going off, I got a 800 R 800 M 750 for a superscore of 1600/2370. For HYPMS, you’re going to want some high scores.

Retake it … I had 2200 first take, then 2350 second!

Above a 2100, your scores wont make a difference. At that point, most colleges stop differentiating. I only took the SAT once, got a 2260 (M: 760, W: 750, CR: 750), and got into Stanford early. Schools don’t read your SAT essay–they have plenty of others from your application. If I were you, I wouldn’t bother taking it again. Instead focus on grades and extra-curriculars! Schools will be more impressed by lots of leadership positions than they will be by another high SAT score.

Take it again, but don’t spend more than a noght or two preparing for it. :/

^^ The notion that above 2100 doesn’t make a difference is not true. 2100 will put you below the avg score for the top schools in the country. There is a huge difference between 2100 & 2260.
