2250 Retake?

Hi guys!

So in January I took the SAT and I got a score of 740W, 770M, 740CR. I know it is a good score, and honestly I’m pretty satisfied with it.

Originally I wasn’t gonna retake, at least not in May, because I was planning to take Math II and Physics then, but now with one day left to register I’m debating again.

I’m an international student from Canada, nothing exceptional, no hooks. If I’m aiming for top schools (Ivy-level, clearly super reaches), will having a better score help me in any way? I know generally past a certain point it’s all kinda the same, but I’m scared that when I get rejections I’ll regret and think that maybe a 2300+ would have made a difference.

Another thing is that I didn’t actually study for the SAT much. I did one practice test, and memorized about 30 vocab words. Seeing the hardworking people on this forum, I’m really sorry, please don’t think I’m boasting or being annoying. I’m mentioning this because I’m wondering if I study for next time, will it make a difference? Clearly this cannot be my best, but I got really lucky this time (esp. with CR), so if I study and get a worse score, gosh…

Lastly, do you know if most schools superscore, or if they look at all? I only know for my top choice, which superscores, but what about others? (sorry, lazily extorting info out of you guys that I can easily research) If they only care about the highest in each section, I think I’ll retake because I know I can get 800 on math, and probably better on my essay (hahaha I got a 7…) and writing in general.

I’m also planning on taking the ACT in June, but just decided that right now at this moment haha, so I don’t actually know anything or prepared yet. Just wanna take it for the experience of taking I think.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for your replies in advance!

Your scores are excellent, Congratulations for such a great score. First of all, people with 2400 get rejected in IVY’s and people with 2250 get in. If you can prepare for math 2 and physics, then do so. You will never know if you will get into IVY’s or even some top schools like Stanford. But you can work with your EC’s and GPA. Some school superscore you need to make a list and look for them. Best of luck!

Thanks!
I probably won’t retake, I think just needed some support for my decision specific to my case.

You’re welcome. Keep working hard with the subject tests, GPA, and EC’s.

I will, thanks!

@CherryCream‌ I’m also hesitating to retake but I got 700 CR, 790 Math, and 780 Writing on my SAT. Unfortunately my CR score is lagging behind a lot. In your case all your scores are right by that 750 range, so I think you are in a better position than I. I’m going to retake one more time and see how I do, but not go crazy if I do worse in Math or writing, just trying to boost my CR score.

@vmiller‌, well it depends what major are you looking for. Schools like MIT look Math 770+ if you are looking for engineering. But for IVY’s that’s scores is good. If you can increase a little bit your CR, then take it. Try to work hard the best you can for each section.

@vmiller7723 Ohh if you are retaking it kinda makes me wanna retake too. I won’t in May though, maybe October since I can’t apply early to my top choices. Good luck on boosting your CR score! It’s already so good, but better can’t hurt haha.

You won’t be rejected for your scores @CherryCream‌. You are fine, but if you want to try, then take the test. Schools don’t only look for a stellar scores, there is more than that.

2250 is an EXCELLENT score. But if u are seeking merit scholarships, 2300 will unlock more money.

Most of the schools look for Math and CR combined.

Ohh merit scholarships! I didn’t even start thinking about those, thanks @GMTplus7!

No reason to retake (but it wouldn’t hurt, except you have to think about all the other things you could do with your time you would otherwise practice for the retake) - also, a higher sat brings no promise of an ivy. Best of luck.
