Hey, guys. My guidance department knows nothing about things like this, so I thought I'd try for an answer here.

I scored a 229 on the PSAT. I live in Virginia, and from what I've seen and heard, 229 should clear the NMSF cutoff easily.

I got a commended letter ages ago, but never a semi-finalist notification. I thought it might just be taking awhile, so I let it go, but now it's October... and still no letter.

You didn't go wrong. Someone else did. 229 will clear any state easily. If your guidance department is full of ingnorant bozos, I feel sorry for you just contact NMSC IMMEDIATELY. Search for their website and find their phone number.
I got mine by the start of Sept. and I'm pretty sure they all get mailed out at the same time. In fact, It's due Oct 12. No worries. If there is indeed a problem, it is not your fault and I'm sure they will extend the deadline for you.

Did you get a 229 as a junior? Doesn't count for any other year. Are you homeschooled or doing a non-traditional path? That means NMC may need clarifying info. Get on the phone to NMC ASAP.

Contact your counselor and/or principal ASAP. They should have received the paperwork for you to apply for finalist. Were there any other semifinalists at your school? It may help to get your parents involved if the school is being difficult.

It sounds like you should call NMSF directly, if your counselor has no info for you, and you did take it as a junior, and you are a US citizen. Try this number and you'll get a live person who will probably know what to do: 847-866-5161. But hurry - you need to send the packet in by 10/13. The application is simple for you, but you do need a short essay. Your school has to endorse you and record your transcript info on the form.

Thanks guys. Just to clarify, I was a junior when I got the 229, and I am a US citizen born and bred at your average American public high school with no frills. I'll try that number.
