I’m applying RD, but I feel that I have no chance because a lot of people have been deferred with near perfect SATs. By the way, does anyone know the ED acceptance rate this year yet?

don’t freak out about it. i got in with only a 2100. i think they weigh other factors more heavily. (i had a 600 math sat I and a 630 u.s. history sat II)

I was deferred with my 2370. As well as 800-800-800 SAT IIs.

FYI Brown doesn’t want a group of people with perfect scores. It wants a unique group of talented people who are talented in different ways. My SAT’s weren’t anything to brag about either.

Yeah, I was wondering about the ED acceptance for Brown this year. Five or six people from my school applied ED and so far I’ve heard that three have been deferred; three kids with good grades and excellent extracurrs. I’m a little nervous now because I had just submitted my application to Brown two days ago and I’m applying RD.

i got in Early Decision with a 2220 (680V, 800M, 740W) and 790 math 2, 720 US history, 650 bio, so while my scores were very good, they were not GREAT but it really isn’t all about #'s

I had a 2290 SATs (760-780-750 v-m-w) and 2 800 SATIIs (Math 2 and Physics), but that’s definitely not what got me in. I applied as a CS major, but I spend at least as much time doing computer stuff as I do music. I’m in 7 music groups, the leader of one of those 7, and have been doing theater at my school for the past 2 years. Those got me in just as much as my scores, if not more.

I have a 1990 (660CR / 730M / 600W) and I got into PLME.

Still not sure what happened, but I won’t complain!

You have to consider the fact that having a 2300+ does not automatically confer a higher chance of admission. In fact, Brown’s yearly trend seems to be turning away from that. Brown instead seems to select applicants that are unique and demonstrate specific nuances that would be appreciated by its community as a whole.

I have a 2360 and a 4.0 GPA. I don’t have enough to offer Brown outside of academics. There were probably many, many others like me (or better) in the applicant pool that also got deferred, or perhaps even rejected outright. I wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow if I was rejected come April.

The world is getting smarter all the time. High SAT scores mean less and less each year (which, unfortunately, screws with academically strong applicants like you wouldn’t believe). I wouldn’t be surprised if 2300+ was considered “average” in eyes of adcoms in the future.

Good luck, nonetheless.

I have a 2220 and about ten bazillion extracurriculars (which I obviously care about and don’t just do to get into college). I have a 3.75 GPA. I didn’t get in.
So do they care about SATs?
Do they care about grades?
Do they care about extracurriculars?
What DO they care about?

WHO KNOWS?!?

SATs arent’ everything. You need good SATs but you also need much more. Near perfect scores are no guarantee of getting in.

Someone at my school with a 2380 (and pretty good ECs, apparently) got deferred. I think she applied to PLME, though.

SATs aren’t even close to everything when applying.

Brown publishes admission percentages by SAT score. Less than 1/3 of those with an 800 score are admitted.

I got deferred and I have no self-esteem now. I haven’t finished my RD apps to other schools but I don’t know what went wrong in my application to Brown. I don’t want to make the same mistake as I did on my Brown application (whatever that is) on my other apps! I had such high hopes up of getting in and now I don’t know what to think.

ClaySoul: “You need good SATs…”

Well, clearly not! More than a few people with 1900s and 2000s have gotten in.

At least among the CC population, there appears to be no relationship at all between scores and decision.

SlightlyConfused, I feel the same way. I went over and over and over my essay, and I don’t know how it could be improved. I’m very diffident about sending the same one off to every other school : /

Do not draw unwarranted conclusions about your applications or likelihood of admission elsewhere. It is very competitive. Do your best on all your applications, review the details to make sure they are correct, and include some safeties.

As the chart cited shows, SAT’s do matter, but even 800’s are far from assured admission.

more than a few equals 1500 not.

the chart shows the number of people with 800’s that didn’t get in. Well what about the 790’s? 780’s? 770’s. Try 760’s .Oh, 750’s. You get the idea. Pretty soon it adds up. They matter.

And for the record, I don’t even consider a 2000 to be an atrocious score. But I’m not really up on the whole new SAT thing…I’m a child of the old generation.

From what I’ve read and have been told by admissions officers and guidance counselors, when you get to schools that get applicants with SAT scores above 2100, it basically becomes a crapshoot. Anybody can get accepted, it’s really just random (or admissions officers look obscure applicant factors)

if you’re an older student sat’s dont matter too much
