2300s SAT - Deferred?

^^^ it’s not entirely random, a good application (like outstanding essays) go a long way.

But what does happen is that hundreds of qualified applicants, with good applications, get turned down. So I wouldn’t say it’s random, I’d say it’s just unfortunate. I’d say everyone who gets in definitely deserves to be here, but there are many that deserve to be here but don’t get in for reasons unkown…

There is also “averagely outstanding syndrome” – the concept that someone can be outstanding in their accomplishments but doesn’t stand out – because almost all of the applicants are also outstanding in their accomplishments!

It’s not a crap shoot, but it is a game, and you have to play it right. PM for help. I know a lot about applications (I applied to college 3 times – once my senior year, once last minute during my year off, and once as a transfer). Finally got it right the last time around. Made significant changes in the way I presented my application.

and wolfman, you’re right, but most applicants (especially on this forum) are not older students. even most transfers are just 1 year removed form high school.

The trouble is, so much of the application process relies on factors that cannot be controlled in any way by the applicant. There are so many people with amazing test scores and activities that factors like minority status, alumni relatives, or overcoming hardships like a close relative’s death play a huge role. None of these can be controlled by any applicant, hence the result seems “random”.

i dunno about overcoming the death of a relative being a booster in admissions…unless that’s your essay topic.
