2310 SAT Trombone Player <Chances?>

Schools:

Yale
Princeton
Columbia
Brown
Upenn
Rice
Boston College

SAT: 2310 (1 sitting)
SAT II: 2330 (3 subjects combined)

GPA:4.0, ranked top 3%

7 APs, all 5's except for 1.

I have spent most of my life since Middle school on Trombone.
Just 2 other clubs, president and VP, but to me, they're not as important as Trombone.

Since 7th Grade, I've gotten 1st Chair Trombone in the All State Band 4 times, which is like being the best in state at Trombone in my grade. I am from a southern State west of Mississippi, where it has a very competitive music environment. also, I performed with my State's finest youth symphony and wind bands.

I sent in my CD recording to colleges, and I thought it was pretty good.

Music is my passion and I wish to study music, but I also want to study other liberal arts subjects in college as well. Would being a skilled Trombone player put me in a favorable position?

Thanks,

T.D.

Yale: Reach
Princeton: Reach
Brown: Reach
UPenn: Reach
Columbia: Reach
Rice: High match
Boston College: Low match/Match

is Reach the worst case scenario? (least chance?)

is that around 5-10 %?

I give the reach rating when the chances are 0-20% or something similar. Brown is more reachable than the other Ivies on your list.

Reach means the hardest to get into, but you have to understand, those schools are reaches for everyone, no matter your stats. The best we can ever say is that your stats are in range and your EC looks interesting.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using CC

The schools are not reaches because you have bad stats, but because they are so hard to get into that they are reaches for almost everybody. You are a strong applicant though.

Do you even have a safety, or an acceptance letter?

yes, i have my state school acceptance, from early action.

What is your race?
Have you won any important awards as a trombone player?

If you are black, all those schools should come down to a high match. If you have also won important awards, those schools should come down to matches. Otherwise, Caltria is right.

I am mixed, but i don’t have any URM blood in me, so it won’t help me.

I won principal/ assistant principal seats in the State’s Youth Orchestra and Wind Band, two of the nationally recognized music ensembles.

But other than placing 1st in my state for 4 years, nothing international or national level.

Your extracurriculars are great but not very unique. You focused a lot on trombone, but that’s about it. Do you have any composition background? Have you started some sort of music program?

Also, if you are african american, you are guaranteed to be accepted to all of these.

hmm i don’t think that being Black makes that much of a difference, but who knows.

Unique EC! Good stats! So you can likely get in!

I personally have never seen a 4.0 2200+ black be rejected by HYPS.

But even HYPS is reachable.

Is it that hard for non-URM’s to get in?

and what do you mean by HYPS is reachable, Catria?

It really is, TromboneDude. Look at the stats from various universities on this forum. Many who say they were accepted with slightly worse stats than others happen to be of a unique ethnicity.

do you know how much an impact a recommendation from music faculty from the school i am applying to can do to my application? for someone like me?

Like a Trombone professor or Orchestra director?
