I took the SAT for the first time on March 9th, and received a 2340 (CR 740, M 800, W 800). I'm afraid to take the ACT now, especially if I end up with below a 35 or so. I haven't taken a practice yet, but I feel that I won't be able to do as well (I did a lot of prep for the SAT). Is there any point in taking the ACT and risking doing poorly? Also, are there any colleges that require both ACT and SAT?

You don’t need to send the ACT scores if they are not good. Most, if not all, colleges just require one and will take whichever one you send.

First of all, your SAT score is great Secondly, the poster above me is correct. You only need to send one or the other, not both, so if you want to take the ACT, I say go for it!

Thanks for backing me up. ;-)

There ARE schools that require you to send ALL scores. Among those is Stanford. You’ll need to look up each school to see what they want to see. I can’t see any reason to take the ACT unless you want to avoid SAT IIs (some schools will use the ACT with writing in place of SAT IIs).

Oh, Erin’s Dad is correct too; sorry for overgeneralizing - MOST schools only ask for one or the other :P. But even if you get sub-35 on the ACT, the fact that you did well on the SAT would be enough; with regard to his last statement, I think Yale is one of the schools that lets you take the ACT in lieu of SAT IIs? (correct me if I’m wrong)

There is always a confusion here. Most schools that requires to send in ALL scores, they refer to ALL attempts of SAT, or ALL attempts of ACT. Most of the time, you don’t need to submit both SAT and ACT scores. In any case, ACT scores are easier to hide. If you are sending in SAT2 scores, very likely the ALL scores requirement includes SAT1 too. With a score of 2340 in SAT1, I would not worry if you would get a low ACT score at all. If you are going to take ACT, take it with writing to make it more useful. Many schools require either SAT1+2SAT2 or ACT+writing.

^ completely agree. I would just take the ACT plus writing just for the heck of it since even if you do bad, you don’t have to send them your ACT scores and can just send your SAT & subject tests. I scored really well on the ACT and ended up sending my ACT score instead of my SAT & subject tests.
