hey..
I just want to reply from the perspective of a current freshman.
Last year, I was in the same shoes as many of you. I received the distinguished honors scholarship, not even bothering to apply for dean's honor because I never thought I would end up here.

Some things that affected my decision
1) MY VISIT (this was the biggest). I came down from IL for honors weekend and absolutely fell in love with the school. the people here are so diverse, friendly, and intelligent. If you have the budget, I would definitely urge you to come visit if you are OOS.
2) money: My instate school (U of I - Urbana) was almost the same cost after scholarships. I think Tulane was ultimately a little more, but I really do think it's worth it.

I'm going to be an honors weekend host as well as an orientation coordinator in the fall, so feel free to ask questions if you are still considering Tulane. Thanks.

My son also did not receive the DHS after submitting an original classical music piece that took a lot of time to compose and yes, we (parents) are disappointed because he is NMF, etc. But that said, our daughter just graduated from Tulane in May (she had 1/2 tuition scholarship) and it is undoubtedly a great school. The academics are solid, but she was able to have a life at Tulane. Her Katrina semester was spent at American Univ., another good school.

about these 24k and 17k scholarships... i got my "scholarship explanation" letter today as i like to call it and i just thought y'all should know that these merit scholarships are per semester so if you received one for 17k, like me, that 24k a year (and 48k if you got 24) so really it basically covers everything... I didn't realize that it was this much money until i got the letter that more fully explained it and i thought y'all would want to know

^^^^Cbrdlik,
Perhaps you have one of the specific Louisiana awards that is paid differently. Most of Tulane's scholarships are granted per year, not per semester. So if, for instance, you are awarded 24K/ yr, you will see 12K/ semester, not the other way around.

Question about the Scholarship Informational Sheet that was mailed. Where it says sign - does that mean if you sign you are ONLY accepting the scholarship? Or does that mean if you sign you are telling Tulane you accept the scholarship and are choosing to ENROLL? thanks a lot.

Can you folks describe the "scholarship informational sheet/explanation letter" to which you are referring? I'm not sure it is the same as what was provided with the original scholarship award DS received, and it sounds like the letter to which you are referring just arrived. Thanks

compared to some schools, like vanderbilt, tulane gives out a WAD of money. ppl who are really smart would get the 24,000 here but NADA at Vanderbilt or Wake forest.

the letter i received i got in the mail friday Feb. 29. It was this letter that told me more about my scholarship that further explained that the 17k was renewable for 8 semesters (hence the 34k a year)

freezenthaw- yes i believe that signing the paper and mailing it in accepts your scholarship and says you will be enrolling.

jym626- yes this is a different letter than the original that first notified me of my scholarship. oh and i have no idea if this is a special la scholarship, i just know what my letters tell me... sorry i'm not a better source of info about that

I think that the Presidential Scholarship, while renewable for four years (or 8 semesters), is awarded on a yearly basis. This seems confusing, there is a logical process by which i came to this conclusion.

If you go to Tulane's financial aid website, it will give you the COA per year:

Yearly tuition is ~40,000/year, or about 20k/semester. The Dean's Honor Scholarship, Tulane's highest scholarship, offers free tuition for one year, so about ~40k/year. Since the Presidential Scholarship is less selective than the Dean's Honors, it would make sense that it is worth less than the Dean's, or $24k/year. Also, if the scholarship was on a per semester basis, the scholarship amount would exceed tuition, which doesn't make sense. Therefore, though it would be nice, I think the 24k is on a per year basis, rather than a per semester one.

cbrdlik -- Correct, the 17k or 24k are per year amounts.. I believe the semester wording may be due to the required GPA to keep the scholarship would operate on a semester basis... if you don't maintain required GPA in a particular semester the scholarship is no longer renewed.

Prior to making any commitments to the school, if you are counting on more than 17K or 24K per year, make sure to call the financial aid office to verify the scholarships and how they work. They have been very responsive anytime that I or my D has had to contact them.

niorslacker-
Theis table, while it doesnt include the upcoming yrs fees http://www.tulane.edu/~registra/figs/ensu/tuitug.shtm breaks out the costs/fees even more. From my understanding, the DHS covers only the tuition (ie about 33.500, based on this past yrs costs) not the ancillary fees. I also agree that cbrdlik must have misunderstood the meaning of the 4yr/8 semester thing. There are a few scholarships (DHS, top Community service and I believe some LA legislative awards) that give full tuition. Don't know if there is any bigger scholarship award. Anyone know?

cbrdlik,
I imagine that what they meant is that the annual award is renewable each sememster, so that you understand that only 1/2 is paid each semester, and if, for example, you take a second semester off, or heaven forbid don't keep up the minimum required GPA for the scholarship (most of the scholarships have a GPA minimum requirement) then the scholarship payment wont occur that semester.

Also, know that unless it has changed, for some reason the scholarship can not be used for the summer semester. My son wanted to take a couple of 2 courses during the summer semester and graduate a semester early. Tulane said that he could not use it for the summer. This surprised us, as it would have cost them less to let him use it during the summer vs. that last spring semester.

yeah i read the summer thing... and trust me i wasnt planning on any money, my parents had already planned on paying the full cost so it was a surprise to get anything

Cbrdlik- the annual bit is stated in the first paragraph (I just got my letter... no idea why I got it a few days later than you)- it is 17/24 a year.
