<p>At least one 24-hour library is supposed to be one measure of how serious (at least a segment of) the student body is. Could we create a list of known colleges/universities with a library that stays open all the time?</p>
<p>One I know is the University of Michigan.</p>

<p>One thing that might need to be pointed out about UMich’s 24-hr library (the Duderstadt center, possibly with different spelling), is that the computers there are only open to Engineering students. Non-engineering students would have to bring their own computer to use the Internet. I think there is a computer lab on central campus that is open 24-hours (fishbowl, open until at least 2 AM), and that’s for all students.</p>
<p>Edit: I’m pretty sure the Duderstadt center is open 24-7, but I’ve never been there at 3 am on a Sunday or anything like that. They’re definitely open all through the week.</p>
<p>Vanderbilt University’s Science & Engineering Library is open 24/7 Monday-Thursday during the school year. </p>
<p>As an academic librarian, I can tell you that I’ve never heard that mentioned as a measure of student “seriousness” in terms of academics. All research databases are available 24/7 as well as some books since many are now purchased in e-book format & available via computer. Students who come into the library during overnight hours are usually looking for a quiet place to go to study/get away from roommates, or someplace safe that is access restricted.</p>
<p>Good idea! I can’t think of any from the colleges that I’ve visited, with the exception of during finals but I found this with a Google Search.</p>

<p>K-State’s library building is open 24 hours most weekdays, but the staff go home at 22:00.</p>
<p>This seems like a silly criterion. 24-hour study space is important, but it doesn’t really need to be at a library, does it?</p>

<p>Brooklynborndad, so true! I’ve never worked so many hours as I did in architecture school.</p>
<p>Vassar explained to us that they deliberately don’t have the library open 24 hours so that kids are forced to go home and sleep. But it seemed to both me and my son (night owls) that their hours were not very student friendly. Since I never studied in a library in my life, this did not seem so terrible to me.</p>
<p>W&M has various 24 hour study areas (computer labs, lounges, etc). Main library is open 24/7 during exams.</p>
<p>The basement of Penn’s main library, Van Pelt, is usually (always? Not too sure…) open 24/7.</p>
<p>Macalester has a section of its library called the link that’s opened 24 hours a day, it’s a bridge/walkway that connects the main library to one of its primary academic buildings. I don’t know what it’s like inside as it was only pointed out to me.</p>
<p>It so depends on the individual. My D is an absolute library hound, both for studying and because she’s loved libraries all her life – the way some people love the beach or amusement parks. But she’s organized, deadline-focused, and not a night-owl. You’d never catch her there after 10pm. Though she would like it if they opened by 6 or 7 am. Not typical, I know, but there you have it.</p>

<p>I think a 24 hour library could be a tipping point for certain students. My son often studied in his library this past year because he was living in a house that was not heated nor cooled very well. I work at a public library that closes at 9 pm and borders a college. We have those students come in to study for hours and have to chase them out at closing time.</p>
<p>I think this is an outdated criterion.</p>
<p>It might have made sense in our time, but today’s students are not dependent on physical libraries either for study space or for many types of research. Modern residence halls have study areas, many campuses have wireless internet access throughout, reserve books have mostly been replaced by online resources, most students have laptop computers, and a remarkable proportion of the library system’s resources can be accessed from the student’s own computer.</p>
<p>Despite this, some students love libraries. Others, though, including many very competent students, rarely set foot in them.</p>
<p>To me libraries are like banks…they still need to exist for the rare times you need to visit, but 99% of their functionality can be accessed without entering the physical location.</p>
<p>We have this thing called the “internet” now :-).</p>
<p>I don’t think its the resources in the library that are really necessary, it’s the space. I like to study surrounded by books - and it’s really a luxury these days to flip through a real book from time to time. That said, I cant say I’d be in a library after midnight (and rarely that late, but things happen), so its not a huge deal for me. Stanford has some parts of the lbirary system open for 24 hours.</p>
<p>I believe all of Caltech’s libraries are open 24/7 provided you have an ID that can open the door.</p>
<p>At Carnegie Mellon the main library (Hunt) may or may not have been open 24/7. I think I went in there about five times during my time there since I mostly spent my time either in the engineering library (definitely not 24/7 as I found out a few times when I needed a reference book the night before an assignment was due…) or in my department’s private computer lab. We even had our own private cubicles there!</p>
<p>I know my daughter and her peers slept in the Reed College library during finals and apparently didn’t go back to their dorm ( cause it was a whole 7minutes away) to change clothes or shower.</p>
<p>But generally they were closed from 2:30 am to 8am ( gotta have some time to spray everything with Febreeze)</p>
<p>Clemson’s library is 24/7 during the weekday.</p>
