2400 in SAT but...

By the way, I am an international piano player too. I don't like to put it on this site b/c ppl will say that I am a sterotypical asian...lol.

I am totally supporting you though, since we are so alike.

a slight change of course in topic, but which of these colleges also maintain a solid music program?

I also want to continue my music studies, whether it be double major, minor, or just lessons.

I'd try for the columbia-julliard joint program thing if I were you. It's notoriously difficult to get into, but you seem qualified.

JHU and Peabody...

I'm auditioning for Juilliard, and I applied to Columbia College. If I get in to Juilliard, I'll be cross-registering as an oboist. The joint program seth blue mentioned is only for Columbia College students who already have 94 credits, so you can think about doing that if you go to Columbia. You get to spend your senior year at Juilliard, which is pretty cool.

"I also want to continue my music studies, whether it be double major, minor, or just lessons."

Just wondering, what would your other major be?

I think you've got pretty good chances of getting into an awesome school. Great job on the SATs and everything else! :)

well if you want some input from someone with similar background, here you go: i too got a 2400, straight As every year, great SAT 2s, 5 APs + 3 senior year, lots of latin leadership stuff, some piano (not seriously though), internship at NIH, and i'm also korean. but i got deferred from harvard, which i can understand. the top notch schools look for extraordinary kids that truly stand out (and legacies). it also depends on what HS school you go to.. my hs is a science & tech magnet school full of buncha super smart kids, so i dont really stand out. but i guess if your school is "okay" and you're one of the best, you have a pretty good shot. but yeah, unless you've done something like cure cancer or won american idol, you never know because admissions is very unpredictable. the thing that might go against you is that you dont sound any different from any other asian. hope that helped

So you guys are saying that if a white kid had the same amazing stats as an Asian kid, the white kid would have a better chance of getting into a selective school?

no not necessarily.. i'm saying that there are lots of asians with similar stats as she does, which makes it hard for her to stand out because she seems like "every other asian".

im gonna go cry myself to sleep... thanks CC!

whew... those are some great credentials. There are others with similar numbers, but there are plenty of smart people (including Asians) whose numbers aren't close. There are too many great applicants outthere for any one school (Harvard, certainly, but many other schools turn down people who are obviously qualified--for example, Duke turns down most of the 1500 valedictorians who apply). Fortunately, there are plenty of great schools that can challenge the best and brightest.

shoenberg3, are you from a bay area high school?

i got perfect score too. well you probably wouldnt believe me =)

cottonass, nice name

dude i think you have a good chance; these people are just jealous
even if you appear to be the typical hard studying piano playing asian nerd
you show a real passion in the piano, especially because you've won contests, want to continue (make sure to let them know like you've shown us), and "along with full-lenghth charity concerts and music lessons for the poor"
that's great that you have tried to help less fortunate people with a major strength of yours, and you should definently convey that to colleges thru a fantastic essay, showing how much love you put into your EC but how it also serves as a volunteering thing, like a a double strength essay

and you have good scores, which means you study hard and have some intelligence, some leadership which means you're involved, yet have a pretty normal life and don't stress out too much (2 Bs)

in fact, i wish I had your stats dude
you'll go far, Good Luck!

It's not just jealousy. It's also annoyance. If you're smart enough to get 2400, have about a 4.4 GPA, and have "1st place wins in 7+ competitions , few of them in international, national level (i can't name them in fear of revealing my name)
along with full-lenghth charity concerts and music lessons for the poor", you're smart enough to know that 2 B's doesn't keep you from getting into college.

I'd say you have a decent chance at colleges, the only thing that might hurt you is that you're an Korean American. (I'm an international student from Taiwan, so my pool is simular than yours) That's what I hate about admissions, b/c no matter how good I am, I can always get rejected b/c I'm an asian....
btw, if you're a white/black/hispanic/native american, you'll have probably 90%+ in the top schools....

Junior from my son's high school got a 2400 on the recent SAT's. He was profiled on the front page of the newspaper, and CNN ran a short segment about him last week.

FYI, he is a white kid, who attend CTY camps and received mid 1300 SAT in 7th grade, and as a sophomore scored 1590 or 1580...not sure. In any case, quite remarkable.

very little chances at ivies. the admission officers will see through your ploy and know that your paretns forced you into piano at the age of 4. By the way, those trophies were tiny despite being "international". They really shouldn't call some of these competitions international when they are just a citywide competition...

"very little chances at ivies. the admission officers will see through your ploy and know that your paretns forced you into piano at the age of 4."

probably.

they will also know about teh $4000 you spent on sat prep cause your mediocre grades do not correspond with the sat score you got.

3.6 unweighted as a junior...

with jazz choir and art as 2 of your 8 classes.
People are getting better and better at spinning things.

When I say I volunteered at a community center bagging food and cleaning trash, CCers said it was a bad ec.

But when I say it is a non profit organization assisting rape victims, impoverished invididuals, CCers say it is a wonderful organization and say I am worthy of top schools.
