I have an Apple Airport express and I have a 6 ft ethernet cable. I was told that a 25 ft cable is recommended. I will be living in Unit 1 Mini suite and the room isn't even that big. My Airport Express needs to be plugged directly into a power outlet. Can I just use my 6 ft cable or can I just buy a 15 ft cable for a lower price?

You don’t have to use a 25 ft cable, but sometimes it is handy. The ethernet cord input in the wall is only going to be on one side of the room (I think) so either you or your roommate may need a longer cord if you’re going to be on the other side. It may also let you move around more with your computer, instead of just at the desk.

I lived in Stern last year, and they actually provided ethernet cables for us, but I’m not too sure if it is the same in other dorms, such as the units.

You can use your 6 ft cable, but I think 15 ft might be more useful.

What about a Unit 2 triple? I have a desktop. Along with a laptop.

If you check the layout of the bedroom, the ethernet ports are located in the front of the room, near the closets. To avoid the unsightly cables running through the room, you’d need at least a 15 feet cable to run behind your desk and bed.

Hey amazon.com is selling 50ft cables for 12 bucks. 25ft for like 4 bucks (but the wire is sorta weak).

FYI. The ethernet wiring and cable wiring in Bowles is kind of ****ty, so bring extremely long wires.

okay i may be technologically challenged, but i don’t really understand how we’re getting internet access in dorms + on campus. is there wi fi that i can just tap into with a password?? what’s an ethernet cable haha. sorry i feel really dumb…

The wifi is crappy, so don’t count on it.
An ethernet cable is the cable that goes from your cable modem to router, cable modem to computer, router to computer, etc. that you use to carry your internet connection from one thing to another.

In your dorm, you will need an ethernet cable to connection your computer to the jack in the wall so you can get your internet

Will a 6 ft Ethernet cable suffice in a unit 3 double?

Will the ethernet port be more than 6 feet away from a power outlet?

a 6ft cable likely would NOT suffice

It depends on how your room is setup. Regarding Unit 2 doubles, most people move their desks so they are against the wall and facing the window (so if you walk straight in through the door you’ll be facing the desks). This is where the ethernet cables are also located, so you could squeak by with 6ft cables. however, there are times when you’ll want to move them around (e.g. if you have a different arrangement… my roommate and I bunked our bed, moved the desks to one of the side walls and placed a couch under the window). I highly recommend 25 ft. cables, they’re not very expensive.

regarding wifi: like others said, don’t count on it much. There are only 1 or two routers per building located in the lounge (I know 5th floor usually has one), but even then the signal can be weak on that floor, and almost unusable on other floors. Also, there is a 2 (sometimes 4… they seem to change it around) hour time limit, so you’ll have to keep logging in all the time. this is a huge hassle as sometimes the signin servers are screwy and it can take 15 minutes juts to log in (even though once you’re logged in the speeds are fine. yes, it’s stupid.)

some people bring a router, but that’s not really necessary unless you have an extra one. I don’t know how easy/hard it is to set up, though, but I saw a few secured ones when I lived in the dorms.

Routers are extremely useful if you have multiple wifi using devices. For example, I have a laptop (in addition to my desktop), a Wii, a DSLite, and an iPod touch that all need WiFi.

I have found the 25 ft cable to be quite useful. Definitely recommended.

In minisuites, the ethernet jacks are on each side of the room. Your desks are likely to not be next to it.

In Unit 1/2 reshalls, the ethernet jacks are in the middle of the room underneath the windows near the floor. Your desks are likely to be there.

Unit 3’s ethernet jacks are on the side of the room next to the closet.

14ft max. I bought a 25ft last year and ended up having to switch it with a spare 6ft because it was too long.

so what length cable is recommended for unit 2 doubles? 6ft? 15ft? or 25ft?
