29- what will this get me?

i got a 29 on the act. 33 in the math section and one of the others, but the science and other brought me down to this.
what colleges am i looking at with this?

i live in Iowa

I'm a senior in high school and attempting to figure out what college is right for me and what can i even get into. where should i be looking?

my parents have always expected me to get into a great school because i have always had mostly A's. i think me ending GPA for high school will be around a 3.7, maybe a little more. The only thing i really have going for me is that i am good at math, and am enrolled in calculus for this year. only other college level classes are marketing and sales and web page design, possibly advanced speech next semester..

as far as extra curricular activities... not much tho.. definitely my weak point.. playing tennis, but only this year.. also participating in the silver cord program (get an award for an amount of community service every year of high school, upwards of 40 hours) i can write an excellent essay though..

have had a job over a year..

so my question once again, where can i go? where should i be looking?

a few nice choices...

University of Chicago
Columbia
Vanderbilt

then
Texas christian university

then kinda fall back ones

Iowa
Iowa state
Arkansas

there are others i have been looking at that fit into each of the areas too..
any recommendations besides these? what can i get into here?

Probably not a good shot at any of your “few nice choices” with a 3.7 and a 29 with no hook and weak ECs… If I were you I’d study hardcore and try to get your ACT up to a 33 and you’d have a much better shot. It’s possible, too. I went from a 30 to a 34 just from taking a few practice tests/learning the test format and timing.

well i have studied for the act a little. i feel like i could get it at least into the thirties, but i don’t feel like i have enough time left to do that, and then to apply to colleges… have i not run out of time?

I believe for regular decision you have two more test dates to get your scores in on time

29 is by no means bad. It’s around a 1920 on the SAT, so you can get into some decent colleges with that score. The ones you listed might be an overshoot, but there are many other colleges which are also prestigious that you have a chance at.

There’s a Sept. 12 ACT test date which should be fine for Early decision/Early Action.

How many hours a week have you spent at your job? There’s a space on the Common App for work, and if you’re working say 20 hours a week, the adcoms understand that you don’t have as much time for ECs as someonw who’s not working.
An EC can be anything, not just school-connected clubs and such.
