2nd choice program

I'm planning to apply to the college of business, but I don't think my chances are that good. I've got a 3.87 weighted GPA (my HS doesn't calculate UW GPA or rank), a 31 ACT, average ECs and no leadership positions). My 2nd choice would be actuarial science. I've read that if you don't get into your first choice school you could still be admitted to DGS, but can you get into your 2nd choice school (in my case LAS), and is there a place to indicate a 2nd choice on the application?

I’m not sure for LAS, but for ENG, they allowed you a second spot for an alternate major. The purpose to DGS is to get you into your desired major within a year, and for that reason, they leave spots open in [most] majors specifically for transferring DGS students. Business may be one of the closed majors though, I’m not entirely sure.

Katho, your stas are not that bad! What is your class rank? If you write a good essay you have a good shot for the business school! Do you have Naviance at your school or do you know what it takes from your high school to get in? A 31 ACT sure helps!

Per Naviance, the average accepted GPA from my HS is right about the same as mine and the average accepted ACT is 31 (also the same as mine). However, there are students with my stats who’ve been rejected from UIUC and I’m sure there are more who’ve been rejected by the COB - I’ve heard the college of business is the toughest to get into. That’s why I’m not all that optimistic. I really have no idea what my class rank is, but I’d guess it’s top 20% (I know it’s not top 10%).

You have a shot at getting into business. If you don’t you will get considered for DGS. Then you can transfer into something else.

Thanks GoIllini. Do you know what the timing is on transferring out of DGS? Can it be done right away, or do you have to wait some period of time? Would I be able to take the courses for my desired major from DGS? Anyone know how difficult it is to get into Actuarial Science?

I’m not sure on the timing. You probably can transfer out of DGS for second semester. Major changes happen at the end of semesters I know.

Would I be able to take the courses for my desired major from DGS?
-Coming in you will probably be taking mostly gen eds anyways so that won’t effect you. As far as major classes go…there are usually registration restrictions until everyone has registered before those not in that major/college can register for that particular course.
