My freshman DD is sick as a dog already. Sore throat, congestion, runny nose, fatigue, general yuck! So unfair! I meant to send her with Dayquil/Nyquil (sp?), but forgot. I'm feeling a little like a parental failure. I also fear for her room mate.

Tell her to get over to the campus med center - they can help.

Agree- D2 had strep and mono the first semester- student health clinic is very helpful. also I have been known to send overnight mail to D for things like tylenol, excedrin and eye drops, claritin, etc. when i am sure she will not go get them at a pharmacy/grocery store… cookies go priority mail… Interesting outcome to all this was- the next semester she was grateful how great she felt! also sent her cup a soup packages and cough drops her favorite… and pushed sleep!

Something is definitely going around. We have an outbreak of some nasty thing just like that at my campus. And HFMD where I work.

If she has a little shop or something in her dorm, they likely have some cold meds to tide her over.

Good luck. Being sick on campus especially this early sucks. :(

New school year, new place = new germs! As a teacher, I have watched new staff come down with “first year teacher syndrome” – has nothing to do with their capabilities…but their immune systems. Saw it in my freshman d last year – bronchitis in September, stomach bugs and sinus infections and you name it. Here’s hoping that she’s built some immunity for this second plunge into the germ soup that is college.

Meanwhile, hope yours feels much better very soon. I agree with others that a care package from home and some sleep are probably the best medicine.

Remind her not to take Tylenol and Nyquil at the same time.

Mine has a cold or allergies. (She never had allergies before.) Already going through the kleenex I sent so I just sent more. She has been on campus for 5 days.

Well if she had to get sick, the beginning is the best time. Seriously, kids are changing classes around the first two weeks or so, freshman starting classes are not running at the capacity they will run later in the term. Trying to look on the bright side, but I totally understand how you must feel. Hope she recovers soon!

D2 is having a really rough time of it. On top of still being sick, she’s also dealing with an eye problem at the same time. Her eyes have been red, sore, and now blurry for over a week. She is wearing her glasses now rather than her contacts, but the glasses are a prescription behind because she never used them. Her prescriptions are pretty strong, she can’t see a thing without them. She sounded horrible with her coughing, sniffling, and broken feeble voice. She made an appt yesterday at the student health center. They referred her out to an eye specialist. Got her an appt in an hour…impressive! She said they told her she has pink eye and prescribed her some expensive drops and a follow up on Tuesday. No contacts for a week. (She got some Dayquil for her other symptoms while picking up her prescription.)

Her roommate went home for the weekend (only lives 45 min away). Told D2 she was “homesick and wanted a good meal”. Yeah, right! She was evacuating the plague-ridden germ-fest. Very wise!

At any rate, D2 is holed up in her room. Aside from feeling miserable, she can’t meet any new friends this way. Also, looking at her computer screen for long lengths of time is problematic as well. Sigh!

Any idea how quickly new glasses can be made? I have the prescription.

“Pink eye” is highly contagious. Make sure your daughter washes her pillow case, face cloth and towel in hot water asap. Use a separate face cloth for her face for a few days until the antibiotic kicks in. She should feel better soon. It’s so miserable to be sick at the start of the year for a freshman.

This seems to happen every year. DS (and half the class) got sick first week of last year as well. His school has a ceremony at the end of the first week. If you watch the video of that, all you hear is everyone coughing.

You aren’t a failure - it’s just what happens. You can always send her a care package - ship from drugstore. com or walmart etc. directly. It sounds like a college cold, but I agree to go get checked though -mono and strep seem to make the rounds early in the year on most campuses so it’s worth getting checked.

Lenscrafters advertises that they can make glasses in an hour so I’m sure there must be other places that can make them quickly as well.

Good luck to your D, this is quite a whammy she was hit with. She’ll get over it at some point though and things will be looking up.
