together next semester (spring 2010), but I met with my adviser and she suggested against taking Bio 1B with MCB 102. I definitely want to take Physics and Bio in the spring because Deweese is doing Physics again and I hear 1B in the spring is bomb. Is MCB 102 really easier in the summer? And if this schedule really does look ugh, does anyone have any alternative prereq suggestions?

do physics 8b & bio 1b in spring, mcb 102 in the summer if you are willing to pay for it.
if you can’t afford summer school (it’s $1200 and quite expensive), do physics 8b & mcb 102 in spring and bio 1b in fall. the profs for 102 are easier in spring (no thorner) and bio 1b is now easier in the fall since huelsenbeck & carlson (2 easy ones) are teaching fall.

oh another option is to do physics 8B this spring, bio 1b in the fall, and then mcb 102 the following spring. but it depends on what your major/track is, but you can definitely take mcb 102 spring of junior year and not be “behind” unless it’s a prereq for a lot of your major requirements

^You can take MCB 102 spring junior year and still not be behind if you are MCB (which prereqs MCB 102 a lot).

In Fall 08, my Bio 1A GSI took a poll to determine the composition of his three discussions, he found that 75% of everyone were juniors and the overwhelming majority were MCB. I am sure most of those guys did fine taking MCB 102 a semester “late”

For some tracks though, like immuno track 2 (infectious diseases), MCB 102 is a prereq for MCB 150, MCB 150L, MCB 104, and all elective classes except MCB136, MCBc114 (though taking 102 is recommended). Unless you’re okay taking summer courses/staying an extra semester, you should probably take MCB 102 in fall, MCB 104/150 in spring & fall (doesn’t matter the order), and MCB 150L in last semester at Berkeley. That way you won’t be cramming in your 6 elective courses in 3 semesters.

it is possible to take MCB 102 and 104 simultaneously, I have friends who are doing it, though then again I don’t advocate MCB for premeds unless it is something they really are into. It is one of the toughest L&S majors

wow, more responses! I myself am in CNR and I don’t think I need 102 as a prereq. It’s very reassuring though, that MCB juniors are taking 102 in the spring.

@ 8888888: I don’t know much about pmb13 or PH103, but taking 3b/l with 1b is near the limit of comfortableness - I wouldn’t add more than one technical class.
