Has anyone's student had this problem before and how did he/she resolve it? D is a rising 2nd year and went thru room selection process in the spring. She and her roommate selected a room in their current house/dorm. She's very entrenched in the culture there, hopes to be a Scav captain, etc. Well, she gets her room "assignment" on Friday (which should just be a confirmation of her selection) and finds she's been moved out of the dorm and into grad housing. What's up with that? D is starting to work to fix this, but I wondered if anyone had any specific suggestions, experience, names at Res Life? Thanks in advance.

There was a lot of constraints on housing this year due to the yield of the class of 2017. Housing were approaching upperclassmen to ask them to give up their place as they didn’t have enough room for first years (first years are required to live in college housing). I don’t think they got enough people to volunteer so they had to change some doubles in south campus into triples (see one of the other threads). This might all have something to do with what happened to your D and is something I’m not overly surprised about. Just a thought. It’s unfortunate though and I doubt she’s the only one in that position.

Look at it as an opportunity to meet those grad students! more connections and networking… :)

momzhood - how was your D’s problem resolved? Is she happy with how it worked out?

It has not been resolved yet but Housing thinks it is an IT issue. Her roommate had the correct room assignment and my D’s name, so that was a good sign. D went to Housing and they said several kids had this issue (students who all remained on campus to take classes or do research, as she did). So we think that it is just a computer glitch. (Found it hard to believe that the University would pull a student out of her house after emphasizing the house culture and making in-house room selection a priority during the lottery.)

momzhood - that’s good to hear.

It was an IT issue and is resolved. She’s in the room that she selected in the spring.
