2nd Year Taking Questions

Hi, I'm a current 2nd year at UW-Madison taking any and all questions regarding admissions, campus/social life, the great basketball team, life, ect...

I got in about a week ago. Im from Maryland and dont know much about the school. I was wondering if the cold weather is a big deal when attending Wisconsin. Also, any other information you could give me about the school would be great. Thanks.

Congrats on getting in!

I'm a wisconsin lifer so the weather doesn't bother me much but you have to be prepared for snow that sometimes sticks around until March. There are always those first few weeks in January where no one wants to walk to class in the 20-30 below wind chill but that's nothing a nice pair of boots, jacket, gloves, hat and scarf can't solve. April, May, August and September are also consistently in the 70-80s so you'll get the nice range of temperatures. It's really not as bad as people make it out to be as long as you're prepared for it.

Thanks for the info. Im visiting in a couple weeks. What are the best places to visit in Madison and on campus?

There's lots of great stuff to see. Take a walk up state street (connects the Capital to campus) and see all the great little stores and restaraunts and the new Overture Center along the way. Maybe even walk around the square and check out the Monona Terrace, too. If you have and looking to drive around town a little there are all sorts of things to do in town but it really depends on what you're interested in.As far as campus goes one of the walking tours will do just fine. Make sure to stop somewhere and get some ice cream, too at one of the unions or Babcock Hall.

Is Wisconsin's ice cream really the best?

Thanks a lot!

I'm partial to Babcock. It's better than anything else I've ever had (coldstone, ben and jerry's, the rest of the junk you can buy at the grocery store).

There's also something to eating an ice cream cone (or sharing a pitcher of beer) on the terrace on a hot summer night. Nothing beats that.

Hey EPSIHPSI--- I have enrolled for next year already, and i'm just curious how your adjustment from high school to college was at UW. I am really excited, and have visited twice, each time finding more to love about it. Thanks a lot.

Being a Wisconsin resident, the hardest thing for me was trying to balance the relationships with other friends from HS who go to UW (40+ kids from my HS go here yearly) and meeting new friends. I was able to succeed because I lived on the other side of campus from most people (lived in Witte) and got a random roommate. Getting involved in clubs and working a job on campus really helped. The academics and regular dorm stuff were pretty easy for me.

In short, the key is to make an effort to meet new people and that proccess is catalyzed by joining clubs/groups.

Doing a FIG (first year interest group. A cluster of 9-13 credits that have a central theme and a capstone class which is a small class with a real professor. You take these classes with the same group of 20-30 kids so you form a real bond, too.) if you have room in your schedule is also highly recommended.

Interesting, thanks a lot...I also plan to live in Statesider, as I have already sent in my deposit...What are the relationships between the kids in the private dorms and the ones in the public...It was a tough decision for me, but i figured that i knew exactly where i would be living, and statesider has an excellent location and is really nice

is it too late to apply???

hmm, i don't really know...check the website, i don't think it is,...if you still have time, definitely apply, best all around university in america

Well, you'll be living in close quarters with kids from your own dorm so it's easier to make friendships that way. You'll still be doing everything else with the university dorms people. No one is going to avoid you because you're from the private dorms, but a lot of your friends will probably be from your own dorm, just as a function of location.

Yeah, i figured that...I visited my friend there and that was pretty much the case...However, he brought some kids over from the ppublic dorms, kids from wisco and minn., and they were so much bigger than me it was crazy, but they were real chill...i love that place, so excited for next year

Yea, it's a good time here.

thanx.. EPSIHPSI .. i got da answer
