2nd year uci student changing to Engineer

Will there be a problem that I could not add in as an Engineer major in my second year, particularily ChemE?

I went to their office fall quarter to arrange a meeting with a counselor about switching but they addressed me to a student advisor b/c I'm not affiliated to their school and only those affiliated can talk to their counselors. So I did that, but it was not much helpful much because I've already done the research about switching to ChemE.

So currently..
I'm a math major, planned minor
Need one more Lower Div Math for engineer
Taking classes related to ChemE (G-chem,ochem)
taking physic 7 to fulfill engineer requirement
plan taking a programming class in the fall
just submitted a request to add engineer major(general) online
I acknolege the change of major prereq

I'm gonna attempt arrange a meeting with an engineer counselor
but i want to know your guys thoughts about it.
I appreciate your time.

There are only two problems I can see:

  1. If there’s no room for new engineering students, there no room. I don’t know what the bureaucratic definitions/conditions are, but if there’s some school wide policy that says no students are allowed to transfer in, you’re out of luck.
This also applies if more, better qualified students (ie met more requirements/higher GPA or something). (I’m assuming you meet the requirements. You should be just as competitive as any JC transferring into the engr department)
  2. It sounds like you’d have to be spend a 5th year. CBEMS 45 your 3rd year, 125 4th year, and all the other courses 5th year (former chemE here =). Because you’re a transfer (into the department), I don’t know how they’ll classify you, but most schools lose state funding if too many students stay for 5 years.

I don’t know why, but I think you should be ready to make your case. If it was a rubber stamp process, why wouldn’t they stamp you?
Personally, I’ve found dealing with engineering counselor to be a huge pain in the butt… I felt like there were way too many students talking to them, so they would never really help/counsel students and just rigidly enforce the catalog because it made their life easier…

Thanks for your input. Yes, I am aware that I will be taking another year in school. What I’m worried about is that I will have over 100 units by the end of spring. >.< I’m not so sure if I get a different prereq because the Change of Major site stated this “guideline is pertain to students with 90 units or less”. I really cant take a denial from them. >.>

Honestly it is the 45 series that makes changing to ChemE suck. They should just get rid of it. I don’t think other schools have a sophomore series they have to take.

There’s another problem too…You’re switching FROM a math major to an engineer? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around =0

BigBurrito,

Counselors might pressure you or say it isn’t possible to switch, however this is absolutely not the case. As a UC student, you should already know you can fix or change anything by petitioning it with a good case. Just keep up a good fight, and I’m 100% sure you’ll get the major change. If not, please message me directly. I will talk to the higher ups in the engineering department.

@yahoowizard Thats the usual case. But for me, it was like this bio=>bio, math => math
I’m really enjoying ochem and the interesting math material I learned this year. So thts one reason why I tend to switch.

@Jason
Thanks for the support. I think for sure, I’ll get in since I am taking lower div courses required for chemE. And another note, like what yahoowizard mentioned in another thread, I am paying for their service out of my tuition, even though I do have a feeling changing major or even switching back might annoy the conselors. Do you happen to have connections when you meant by talking to the higher up of the engineering? :D

You shouldn’t have any problems transferring over into Engineering if you meet the GPA requirement for the department you’re switching into. I was in the same boat years ago and managed to get into my department of choice rather quickly coming from a non-science field.

I have another question, should I switch to undecided at the moment and then add ChemE when Im done with the prereq. Math is my backup major, incase I didnt make the min GPA for physics and I feel the Math department will be annoyed if they see me coming back. If the school of engineer see I’m currently Math, they might assume I’m gonna double major. This is all in terms of adding majors online btw.

Stay in your current major. There is no need to switch. As for the math department, they will definitely not be annoyed at you. They need higher enrollment anyway. Change your major via a counselor – it’s more effective.

In terms of connections, I don’t know specific counselors. I can just work my way up to some department leaders to fix any problems like these. I do know some administrators as well. As an alumni, I will be VERY disappointed if the school were to deny someone a switch to engineering!
