If student is doing a 2x2, community then university, and currently lives in CA but wants to transfer out what are some issues to be aware of. Currently in CA community, family moving after two years. This means student has any state colleges, wants to go to east. Anyone transfer from community to NYU Tisch? or RISD? Just curious how the transition went. thanks
California is one of the states where a student who has graduated from high school in the state after enough years of attendance, and is not on a non-immigrant visa, gets in-state tuition and financial aid, so if that applies to the student, the student can transfer to a UC or CSU for relatively lower cost than a school like NYU (very expensive with poor financial aid). See http://ab540.com/What_Is_AB540_.html .
Otherwise, it may be a year after the student and parents move to the new state before being able to get residency for tuition purposes at the new state’s public universities. Check the residency rules in the new state for what needs to be done. Note that some states’ public universities have significantly worse in-state financial aid compared to California public universities.
Of course, NYU and RISD are private, so the state residency is not an issue. But check their net price calculators if cost is of any concern. (Your previous posts indicate that cost is a concern and why the student is starting at community college instead of an expensive art school that she got into.)
Why isn't she just staying put?
NYU tisch won't be a thing as you already were rejected at your best chance as a freshman, right? And money is an enormous problem. Are you the parent or the student?
Normally when parents move like this, the student that has started college stays on instate rates. The only way it is worthwhile to transfer is if you can gain instate rates for her in your new location. That usually requires a time frame of some kind, but do some legwork. What is the job that has you moving so much and have you checked deep into the relo policy re this issue?
I’m not sure if this is Tisch-specific or applies to all NYU transfers in, but transfer students into Tisch are required to maintain a minimum of 5 full time semesters. So that’s minimum +2.5 years, not 2, at NYU tuition rates. Depending what they allow you to use as credit, it could be longer to meet graduation requirements too.
Student is at a community college and needs to transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree. However, California’s AB540 (see reply #1) may help the student get in-state tuition and financial aid at a UC or CSU, even if the parents have moved away so that she would not otherwise be eligible upon transfer.
TISCH and RISD are private universities. Your state of residence doesn’t matter one bit when it comes to the cost to attend. These are NOT public universities with in and out of state rates.
Both schools cost nearly $70,000 a year or so. Are you able to pay the full cost of attendance at RISD or TISCH…because transfers who get accepted (small number) get really not much aid if any.
I would urge you to re-read the responses to this old thread of YOURS. While it’s about Parsons, the reality is that TISCH and RISD would not give her more money as a transfer.
As clearly stated in the older thread…these design schools are likely unaffordable for your family.
