3.0-3.4 gpa, horrible?

^ Unfortunately, a large state university like Florida is going to be “numbers driven” meaning they will be looking primarily at GPA and test scores when deciding on admissions. A strong first semester GPA in your senior year, coupled with strong test results might be able to help but probably not at University of Florida. The big universities are only going to give secondary consideration to your extracurriculars. I think West Virginia was a very good suggestion.

dreamdream: while you may have other very strong stats, GPA (and SAT/ACT) is the main deciding factor for most large publics…

I agree on WVU as an idea; and UKansas in fact, I like alot!

agree with BobbyCT…

dreamdream, please do not end up like this poor girl!

dreamdream,

What is your weighted GPA? When you are looking at admission stats, take note that many schools publish the average weighted GPA. For example, the 2010 freshman profiles at University of Florida and Florida State, from their respective websites, look like this:

Univerisity of Florida
Middle 50% of the Class

High School GPA of 4.0 - 4.4
SAT of 1820-2060
ACT of 27 - 31

Florida State

The academic profile of the middle 50 percent of freshmen accepted in 2010 was: 3.5-4.1 academic GPA; 25-29 ACT composite; 1720-1940 SAT total.

Note that the published GPA is a weighted GPA. If you’ve taken honors and AP classes your weighted GPA should be much higher. Use this number when determining where you might fit in.

^^ disagree, Kenyon will not admit that low of a gpa (it’s a top LAC, the avg. gpa is now aroudn a 3.8). I’m not saying OP’s gpa is bad (I have a daughter with the same gpa), but Kenyon is a reach and the creative writing/English dept. is their hardest program to be admitted. Focus on larger schools if you want the raaa raaa feel. Creative writing though will most likely be found as a major in more LAC’s, so that actually may help you narrow down your search quickly. Use the CC search --make sure to put in major, size of school and gpa, scores (estimated from PSAT’s), and states you want to focus on.

Here’s Kenyon’s profile:

(4.00 scale) Percentage of class
4.0 or higher 37%
3.70-3.99 27%
3.40-3.69 20%
3.00-3.39 15%
2.70-2.99 <1%
2.69 or lower 0%

Keep in mind, these are weighted GPAs, if OP has a weighted 3.5 she’s roughly at the bottom of the middle 50%

My dgt has a 3.47 and was accepted to all of the schools she applied to in Ohio, Kent State and University of Akron. She was also offered small academic scholarships at both schools. She had bad ACT’s too.

West Virginia would be great. It has reasonable out of state tuition, about $17K/year. Not too hard to get into.
Maybe North Carolina State? Out of state tuition about $19K/year.
You might look at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

(I know none of these are in Florida, but hey, U of Florida has out of state tuition around $28K/year.)

DreamDream - A 28 ACT / 3.0 gets you a $5,000 scholarship at LSU and $4,000 at Ole Miss. ACT 26 / 3.0 gets $2,000 from Ole Miss.

LSU has very reasonable out of state tuition to begin with; $5000 off at LSU makes LSU a real bargain. My son visited the campus once, without me, picking up a friend - he said it looked great.

look at Kansas and Mizzou

Can my weighted gpa save me? I take ap classes!

I also have published books if this can further help me get in as a creative writing major.

@dreamdream, If you have an interest in CA. You may want to look into Fresno State (a CSU). They have a division I football program. Have you also considered Arizona? You may want to look into Arizona State, or U. of Arizona, They also have division I football programs.

Thanks for all the input, however I have the rest of my junior year to bring my gpa higher and next year I’m taking on ap classes for a gpa boost if I do well. I’m taking the act June 11. I am not interested in Arizona, but those schools sound interesting. California schools seem tough, but my cousin got into Stanford with a 3.4. Why should I close my windows? I’m planning to apply to all my interested schools and keep my options open.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/907349-western-schools-3-0-3-3-kid.html

Still I thought you said your parents had 100k to spend on all 4 years at the beginning of this thread, so West Virginia University is only 17k for OOS as someone else noted.

So idealistically, your college cannot run you over $25,000/year.

No one yet has mentioned the University of Iowa. It certainly has the “rah rah” factor as well as being academically strong, and Iowa City is a great town. If your school has an account with Naviance, I’d recommend looking to see how kids at your school do vis-a-vis admission to various schools (we’re in Illinois and my D’s school does; average GPA of kids accepted to U. of Iowa is 3.25, with no one being rejected with GPA above 3.0).

Also, don’t overlook University of Nebraska. (Before someone disses it, know that I am an alum!) I got a great education there, had an enormous amount of fun and went on to success in every arena of my life. Lincoln is a great college town for people of all persuasions; I say this as someone who went to precisely zero football games. There is a quite well known blues bar near campus, the Lied performing arts center is fantastic and there’s an on-campus film theatre with very imaginative programming.

Florida? Take a look at Stetson, Flagler and Rollins. Check out their aid programs. All private schools.

Thank you. And my parents will pay max 100,000, however I would also help. Can I get into the University of Florida with a 3.9w 3.4 uw? 27 act?
