3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2011 HS Graduation)

Their poor aid is what’s preventing me from applying to OU–otherwise I like it.

mompossible, your son might want to consider University of Oregon. It fits his criteria very well and he’s likely to get in since they base admissions solely on the weighted GPA.

CIA-- OU’s financial aid’s not generous?

that could be a problem…

I’ve been saving up money from work and looking at scholarships, I hope that it’ll help me out.

Are there any schools that are free to apply to that I might be interested it? I know there’s a huge list stickied somewhere, but I don’t really know anything about any of those schools so it’s overwhelming.
My GPA is 3.4 (weighted)
SAT’s are 1960, but I’m retaking them.
ACT’s are 30 but I’m retaking them as well.
Also taking SAT subject tests.
I live in Pennsylvania.
Colleges that I’m interested in right now are: University of Rochester (#1 choice by far), Juniata college, SUNY-ESF, RIT, Drexel.
Also I will need financial aid.
And I would prefer something on the Eastern half of the US, not really far north but New York is okay.
I would rather have an urban campus. And not too small or too big (5000-ish is great).
I want to major in Biological Sciences, or something along those lines (Bio, Ecology, Environmental Science…)

NZ, Collegeboard says, on average, they meet 50% of need. Unless you have fabulous stats above the range of this thread, I don’t think you’ll be eligible for any merit and most of their need is met through state and federal grants.

you’re right, now that I look at it like that.

the Fed grant really only relieves you of $4,000 more or less.

I live in NYC, would private loans be a bit much?

How much can your family contribute? Taking out 30,000 per year in private loans is WAY too much.

I would recommend looking at the SUNY’s and CUNY’s

^ it might be a little outdated… but most of those schools should still be prob=viding free apps

and…

[Free College Applications](<a href=“Redirect Notice”>Redirect Notice)

Hope that helped! :)

ah! CIA–

My family can contribute 10,000.
I have 6,000 saved up.

With that and the fed grant, that leaves us with 14,000 for freshman year alone.

If your family can contribute 10k, you probably won’t be eligible for the federal Pell grant unfortunately.

Even if you were, I would recommend against taking out over 50k in loans no matter what for undergrad.

Nzhang, I know of those, but they list dozens of colleges and most of them do not match my preferences at all, so I was hoping somebody with more knowledge about them could help me. Since my last post is a page back, I’ll just repost.

yabeyabe2 and tulare…
Thanks for the feedback. Will look into program offerings at your suggestions to check the match.

anyone who has gone thru this please reply…
do kids in this GPA range get merit aid and if so what is the strategy?

Ohio University can be generous with scholarship aid for a 3.0 student. You do need a higher ACT/SAT score. Below is a link to the Gateway scholarship page. Also OU does have a financial aid estimator that will calculate awards you may be eligible for though as a public university OU will not meet all need, especially for an out of state student.

Kids in this reange CAN get merit aid. The key is that it will more likely come from a safety than a match, much less a reach.

There is a thread on CC re schools generous with aid

It helps to be from a region they do not get many appliants from or to be adding diversity to their campus

mompossible, I don’t know about merit aid at the schools that you listed beyond the chart that proudwismom listed. You might want to look into the University of South Carolina because I believe in the past (don’t know if it is still so) that with any merit scholarship they also awarded instate tuition. Also, they say that U. of Alabama offers generous merit aid. I think that they have several campuses and they might also have a chart regarding merit aid. I assume that these schools will have football, but I don’t follow college football to know for sure.

My D was told at one of her favorite schools that she will be guaranteed merit aid with her grades and scores (her ACT is about in line with her grades), plus if she applies early she can get some talent scholarships as well.

This will not be true at the schools where she is buried in the middle 50% of applicants, but we’ve seen it more than once where she is in the top 25%.

Anybody want to throw out some colleges within a days drive of SW Michigan, not too tiny (at least 10,000 students), and not top price.

Are you OK with state schools? There aren’t that many private schools that big. A little bit reachy one might be Syracuse University.

Or also some city schools like DePaul. Less of a college-y campus, and a fair number of commuters, but very well-regarded.

Not much in WI except state schools - lots of nice ones, though. Tell us more details of what you’re looking for.

Virginia Tech seems to fit that mold.

State schools are just fine. She wants the traditional looking college with a decent greek system and a football team. She really wants something like Michigan State or Miami of Ohio, but with a 3.2 those are a bit of a reach.
