3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread (2011 HS Graduation)

adam, Your suggestions are great ones but I wonder if your audience shouldn’t be the classes of 2012 and 2013. Our family has spent the last couple of years looking at colleges here and my poor son has spent the last two months applying to colleges here. There’s no way we’re going to start looking at other countries other then study abroads. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great idea and I know a couple of people that did that, but it’s a little too late for this gang. Also, most of the kids on this particular thread are not known for scoring high on tests, hence the lower gpa’s.

For nyuhopeful, have you looked at Simmons in Boston? (Women’s school) the location in the Fenway is very convenient, with great academics, financial aid, other schools nearby.

An OOS public probably will not give you much financial aid, like UCONN, Delaware, URI, UNH, or UVM or any of the SUNY’s.

Have you looked at Clark University in Worcester?

Chatham in Pittsburgh is another urban Women’s school that always flies under everybody’s radar, within walking distance of two other Pittsburgh schools, Carnegie Mellon & Pitt, I believe.

I am sure others will make some suggestions, too!

There are so many wise wonderful people on this thread and I hope someday to be helpful to one of you in some way with knowledge I could offer. I have either vented or bragged or asked for help in most of my posts and received words of encouragement and helpful advice every time.

So, here I go again…ds missed an appt I made for him while out of town for the day…just a haircut, but for the interview he had scheduled with the admissions counselor who was visiting today from the school he had been deferred from. So irritated with him last night and asked him to please make sure he had pants and shirt picked out for today with no stains, holes, etc and attend to his hair/shaving/grooming in the morning with more attention than usual (attends all boy school so you can imagine the usual). This morning, greets me with sweats/tshirt saying it’s spiritwear day because football playoff game tomorrow. Me…lots of venting…bring change of clothes, etc. He calls at lunch today to tell me his interview went well, counselor liked his midterm grades (mentions everyone else interviewing had spiritwear on, of course)…AND HE GOT A 30 on his ACT! whoo hoo!

That’s excellent ddd! When will he hear from his college choices?

I have haircut arguments quite often with my guys. You know how they say you should pick your fights and hair should not be one of them? I know it’s true, but I HATE hair in the eyes, it drives me crazy.

His hair isn’t even long, just needed shaping up from the last cut for senior pictures late august…and it will get shaved off in the next week or two for hockey…I usually don’t fight him on it…my 13 yr old is another story, oh the long bangs!

Xavier was school he was deferred from. He should hear from Mercyhurst soon as they are rolling admissions and it’s been a few weeks now that they notified us all is in. OSU has started releasing decisions as well and all is in there also. VMI promised by Dec 15 and UDayton and Miami U won’t be until mid-Jan, early Feb. SLU is rolling as well but they are only getting the most recent ACT score so will be a few weeks at least before they have them.

Good news ddd, that is great! Honestly, I had two kids who got all “gussied up” for interviews & two that did not, there was really no difference in their outcomes! Sometimes I think you have to pick your own battles, you know, LOL…

I think we, parents, forget that the schools want to see the “real” kid and if the real kid isn’t good enough at an interview then it probably isn’t the best fit of school for them.

I know I was bad about that with S, I’m learning to ease up a bit with D

My hair feelings are not really college interview related, I just want to see people’s eyes when I talk to them. I’m not saying it’s rational, but it is one of my hot buttons.

congrats DDD!

My son’s view was that he wanted a casual dress school which would accept him for what he is.

Son got his first deferral today- from Pitt. It was a reach and I know they’ve already accepted several from his HS. No tears here, he says it’s one less decision to make in the Spring. :)

I have not seen too many suggestions for schools in the south (Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama; Louisiana, Mississippi, etc) . DS has 3.3 GPA and 25 ACT. Looking for schools that are not huge (i.e that leaves out LSU, Auburn, Bama).
Any suggestions? (or please point me to the right thread/post)?

Sitting across the dining table from S, who is working on the Oregon State insight resume answers. We’re going down to OSU tomorrow–primarily for the football game, but a friend of a friend has agreed to give him a tour of the computing facilities while we’re there, which I think will help to light a fire under him.

Slowly, slowly…progress.

tuitionsaver, I am sure that there are posters more familiar with the south than I am. In FLA Eckerd immediately comes to mind.

If you can do the Carolinas, there quite a few too. Off the top of my head: Elon (reach and think about applying EA), Queens U of Charlotte, Winthrip U, Guilford, High Point, College of Charleston

Editing to say that I had heard good things in the past about Berry College in GA. It is not frequenly talked about on CC and I have no first hand knowledge.

tuitionsaver,Also in North Carolina, there’s Belmont Abbey College, Catawba College, Wingate University, Western Carolina University.

In S.C there’s Presbyterian College, Winthrop Univ. (like nem said),
Charleston Southern Univ., Coastal Carolina Univ., The Citadel (military sch),Wofford College (might be a reach)

In GA, there’s Georgia College and State University, Oglethorpe Univ, Univ. of West GA,
Berry (mentioned by NEM).

PackMom, I never heard of Charleston Southern U. It is good to come across a school that I never noticed on CC before!

TuitionSaver - You looking at public/private, urban/rural, need merit aid, need sports, need LAC, other requests?

We are in GA and both kids looked primarily in South (with same stats) all the way from small rural private to large urban public so I can give you some info if you narrow down the “wants” a bit.

Oh yeah, and what major(s)? I know my D would LOVE to go to Berry - but they don’t have her major.

Elon’s EA date has passed, and yes it’s a reach for a B student. My son has been accepted to Florida Institute of Technology if you are looking for a techy school. Guilford is a great school in North Carolina if you want something laid back. Queens College in Charlotte is a gem of a little school. What major?

kathiep, I think better news will head your way soon

Thank you for your answers. My son is interested in Business/marketing or similar majors; preferably an urban or suburban school; sports are not so important and merit aid would be nice (although with his stats I don’t have much hope).
Anyone knows about schools in Texas?
