Okay so I went to that whole Core thing today, and I still don't know what to do. I took AP Chem in high school, but I got a 4 not a 5. They say that that doesn't really matter in 5.112, and they say that it is better for pre-med, which is what I want to do, but I'm kinda worried that it's going to kill me. So I don't know whether to take that or 3.091. I don't know why I ruled out 5.111, I just did. Anyone know how hard 5.112 is and if a little-bit-better than average Chem student will survive in it? Thanks.

5.112 is hard but not impossible.

If you're doing premed, I'd strongly advise taking either 5.111 or 5.112 -- chem department data show that students who take 3.091 don't perform as well in 5.12/5.13 as do students who take 5.111/5.112.

Why not sign up for 5.112, then drop the course in favor of 5.111 if you find it's too difficult after a few weeks? (Could that work in your schedule?)

yeah, the 5 courses will be better for you as a pre-med. You can always switch down if it's too hard, too

thanks, mollie and danielsjang, I hadn't thought about dropping the class (haha, in hs the office would FREAK if you tried to do that :)) Ill probably try out 5.112 and then drop to 5.111. That sounds like a safe, but somewhat adventurous(for me) plan.

btw, this may seem random, but, mollie, I met your future father-in-law and he was a super cool person. :) He made my parents feel all warm and fuzzy about MIT which is always a good thing! :)

Another cool thing about 5.112 is that because of Pass/NR right now, you can get a D in it and most med schools won't ever know. So if there's ever a time to be adventurous, it's first semester freshman year. I've heard that people who take it end up feeling that they learned a lot and are glad they did the (extra) work just in terms of extra knowledge.

Haha, he is a super-cool person! He's absolutely hysterical, and I love him to pieces.

It definitely would be easy to drop, but if you can, try and arrange your schedule so that dropping 5.112 and picking up 5.111 is a possibility (ie don't schedule your HASS at the same time as 5.111 or whatever).
