I just finished my sophomore year of high school and I am getting ready to enter my junior year. My end of year grade this year was a 3.6 unweighted and a 3.8 weighted GPA. However I slacked off badly my freshman year and now at the end of sophomore year I have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.1 and a weighted GPA of 3.4. I’m very scared that this will hurt my chances of getting into a good college and I was hoping to get advice on what do do to raise my GPA.
Also what do colleges look at more your unweighted or your weighted GPA?
Freshman unweighted EOY GPA: 2.8
Freshman weighted EOY GPA: 3.1
Sophomore unweighted EOY GPA: 3.6
Sophomore weighted EOY GPA: 3.8
I want to go into nursing and I live in Florida.
Depends on the college. I believe UCs look at your weighted GPA and state schools in California look at unweighted. I’m pretty sure private schools look at unweighted as well, but don’t take my word on that. If you really want to get into a good nursing program, I would really try harder my junior year. As long as it seems as though you’ve had a strong upward progression in grades, you should be fine. I know it’s a bit early, but do you have any particular schools in mind that are your safety, target, or reach?
Most look at both weighted and unweighted. It is also not uncommon for a school to put a cap on the AP bonus points.
Keep up the good work. There are plenty of good colleges that will be happy to have you.
You have one year left, make a big impact junior year. Colleges take into consideration grade trends. Also, some colleges don’t weigh freshman year super heavily, it’s sophomore and junior year that they want to see more results out of. Focus on junior year, don’t worry about colleges for now because it will consume you. If you do well junior year and on your sat you have a really good shot at it.
