i’m a senior in high school with a 2.89 unweighted gpa/2.96 weighted and a 3.14 CSU gpa and 27 on the act. i’m not a resident of california nut have a lot of family there so i was looking at some california schools. I was wondering what my chances would be for CSUN and other cal states, and how much lower will they be because of the fact that I am not a resident.
All Cal States (except Cal Poly SLO) use the Eligibility index to rank applicants for each major. They start accepting from the Highest EI down until all spots are filled. Here is the EI calculation:
(CSU GPA x200) + (ACT compositie x10).
As an OOS applicant, you need a minimum EI of 842. Based on your posted stats, you have an EI of 898.
For CSUN, an EI of 850 or higher should put you in good standing.
Will you be able to afford the OOS costs in attending CSUN? It will cost you approximately $6600 tuition plus the OOS fee/unit? If you are not a resident of California, you must add $372.00 to your tuition for each unit.
What about housing? Will you be able to live with family or commute? Add another $12-14K/year to the costs.
So, your tuition and room and board will run about $36,000 per year, can you afford Northridge?

On top of those fees posted in the link, add $372 to your price for each unit; full time students are usually at 12 units or $4,464 per semester for 12 units.
I think you’ll get in - just be sure to bring your wallet.
thanks guys! i have talked a lot about the cost with my parents. one more question - what do you think my chances would be for san jose state? would they be similar to csun?
@jacklynnelle SJSU is basically low match.
SJSU posts their EI’s for each major. You can determine for yourself if you meet the EI thresholds based on this link:

The costs will be the same for tuition for all the CSU’s but room/board and additional expenses will vary based on the location of the campus.
