3/2 Program (Would Like to Know More...)

So I heard about the 3/2 program caltech does and read what I could find ( http://admissions.caltech.edu/admissions/3-2 has an overview ) and it looks interesting but I'd like to learn more about it. My chances of getting into Caltech are mediocre, but there are some nice colleges in the program that I shouldn't have much trouble getting into. I guess my main question is, why does Caltech do it? Like what's the advantage for them over making people do regular admissions?

Also, how good does one have to do in the first three years to make Caltech with the 3/2 program? Any statistics on how many students were admitted through the program? I can't seem to find them.

Thanks,
Daniel

I have no idea how many apply, but only 2 or 3 people are admitted every year for the program.

Really? That's total from all the schools? Wow... wouldn't regular transfer be easier?

Transfering to caltech is very difficult as well, I think they accept like 7% of transfers.
